Jim Slacke
Jim Slacke (born ) is an American former professional basketball player who played seven seasons in the Australian National Basketball League (NBL) for the Illawarra Hawks. After playing college basketball for the Chico State Wildcats in 1972–73, Slacke moved to Australia where he joined the Illawarra Hawks and played in the New South Wales Men's Division 1 basketball competition. The Hawks were preseason favourites for the 1977 Championship behind Slacke and Gordie McLeod. In 1979, the Hawks were founding members of the Australian NBL. Slacke was part of the inaugural team and averaged a career-best 23.8 points per game in his first season. In seven seasons with the Hawks, he played 143 games and averaged 17.5 points per game. Slacke was one of the NBL's all-time best free throw shooters with an 86 per cent clip for his career. He led the NBL in Free Throw Percentage in 1980 with 87.2% (68/78). In the sport of basketball, there are five players play per team, each assigned to positions. Historically, these players have been assigned, to positions defined by the role they play on the court, from a strategic point of view. The three main positions are guard, forward, and center, with the standard team featuring two guards, two forwards, and a center. Free Throw
In basketball, free throws or foul shots are unopposed attempts to score points by shooting from behind the free-throw line (informally known as the foul line or the charity stripe), a line situated at the end of the Key (basketball), restricted area. Free throws are generally awarded after a Personal foul (basketball), foul on the shooter by the opposing team, analogous to penalty shots in other team sports. Free throws are also awarded in other situations, including technical fouls, and when the fouling team has entered the ''Bonus (basketball), bonus/penalty situation'' (after a team commits a requisite number of fouls, each subsequent foul results in free throws regardless of the type of foul committed). The ''Illawarra Mercury'' is a daily newspaper serving the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. Chico State Wildcats
The Chico State Wildcats (also CSU Chico Wildcats and Cal State Chico Wildcats) are the athletic teams that represent California State University, Chico, located in Chico, California, in NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports. The Wildcats compete as an associate member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association for all 13 varsity sports. Gordon McLeod (basketball)
Gordon "Gordie" McLeod (born 7 November 1956 in Wollongong, New South Wales) is an Australian former professional basketball player and former assistant coach for the Cairns Taipans in the National Basketball League (NBL). Professional career McLeod was already known as one of Australia's more talented point guards when the new NBL started in 1979. He joined his home town team the Illawarra Hawks for the inaugural season playing 17 games and averaging 10.1 points per game. McLeod was appointed captain of the Hawks and would continue to lead the team until the end of the 1982 season. After 82 games in the red and white of Illawarra he would sign with the Sydney Supersonics for 1983. After just one season in Sydney, McLeod would re-join the Hawks from 1984, regaining the club captaincy. His return helped the Hawks make the NBL playoffs for the first time in the club's history.
