Jim Patterson (California Politician)
Norwood James Patterson, Jr (born February 18, 1948) is an American politician serving in the California State Assembly. He is a Republican representing the 23rd district, which encompasses eastern Fresno County, including the cities of Fresno and Clovis, and a small slice of Tulare County. He is the former Mayor of Fresno, California. Early career Prior to being elected to public office, he was a business executive and broadcaster owning and operating radio stations in California and Idaho. Mayor Patterson was Mayor of Fresno between 1993 and 2001, defeating incumbent Democrat Karen Humphrey for reelection by a landslide, and being succeeded by Alan Autry. 2002 Congressional election Patterson ran for the Republican nomination in California's 21st congressional district, a district with new boundaries created through reapportionment after the 2000 United States census. California's 23rd State Assembly district is one of 80 California State Assembly districts. It is currently represented by Democrat Marc Berman of Menlo Park. Mike Briggs (politician)
Mike E. Briggs (born January 23, 1959, in Fresno, California) is an American politician from California and a member of the Republican Party (GOP). Briggs was elected to the Fresno City Council in 1994, succeeding Brian Setencich, who resigned a month before his term ended to take his seat in the California State Assembly. Briggs became the second Fresno City Councilman in history to rise to a higher office when he won election to the California State Assembly in 1998 from the Fresno-based 29th district, succeeding Chuck Poochigian, who made a successful run for the California State Senate. At the end of his second term, Briggs decided to run for the newly created 21st congressional district rather than to seek reelection to the legislature. Richard William Pombo, GOIH (born January 8, 1961) is an American lobbyist for mining and water-management companies and former Republican member of the United States House of Representatives, having represented California's 11th congressional district from 1993 to 2007. California Senate Bill 54 (2017)
2017 California Senate Bill 54, commonly referred to as "SB 54" and also known as the "California Values Act" is a 2017 California state law that prevents state and local law enforcement agencies from using their resources on behalf of federal immigration enforcement agencies. The law allows for cooperation between local, state and federal law enforcement in cases of violent illegal immigrants, and is often referred to as a "sanctuary law" due to its resemblance of sanctuary jurisdiction policies. According to a 2020 study, the law had no significant impact on violent and property crime rates in California. Tulare County Shootings
A shooting spree began in farming country near Exeter, California on December 16, 2018, when a man with a gun began shooting at random people, and continued to do so throughout Tulare County for 24 hours. Three people, including the shooter, died. Seven others were injured. The case attracted national attention in the U.S. because the shooter was a convicted felon who had served time in American prisons and had reentered the country illegally for a third time, following deportations in 2004 and 2014. The shooting reignited debate over California Sanctuary Law SB54 because the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement requested the Tulare County sheriff's office to hold him in detention, but the Sheriff was unable to do so under the California Sanctuary Law. Jeffrey John Denham (born July 29, 1967) is an American politician, United States Air Force veteran, and businessman. A member of the Republican Party, he served as the U.S. representative for from 2013 to 2019. George Radanovich
George Purdy Radanovich (born June 20, 1955) is an American politician and former U.S. Representative for , serving from 1995 to 2011. The district includes most of northern Fresno, as well as several rural areas northeast of the city. He did not seek reelection in 2010. He is a member of the Republican Party. Background Radanovich was born in Mariposa, California to a Catholic family of Croatian extraction. He was educated at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. After college, he performed a variety of jobs, including work as a banker, substitute teacher, and construction worker.
