Jim Leis
Jim Leis (born October 10, 1959) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s. Playing career A New South Wales representative forward, he played in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition for Western Suburbs for three seasons between 1980 and 1982, Canterbury-Bankstown for three seasons between 1983–1985 and the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks for two seasons between 1986 and 1987. In his debut first-grade season, Leis was selected to represent New South Wales in the 2nd state of residence game, and kept his place at for the inaugural State of Origin game in 1980. In the same year he was selected to tour New Zealand with the Australian national team although he did not play in a test, and earned two Dally M awards in 1980 for lock-forward of the year and rookie of the year. The Dally M Awards are the official annual player awards for the National Rugby League competition. As well as honouring the player of the year, who received the Dally M Medal, awards are also given to the premier player in each position, the best coach, the best captain, representative player of the year and the most outstanding rookie of the season. The awards are named in honour of Australian former rugby league great Herbert Henry "Dally" Messenger. History The awards were introduced in 1979 by News Limited. The Western Suburbs Magpies (legal name: Western Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club Ltd) are an Australian rugby league football club based in the western suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales. Formed in 1908, Wests, as they are commonly referred to, were one of the nine foundation clubs of the first New South Wales Rugby League competition in Australia. The club, as a sole entity, departed the top-flight competition in 1999 after forming a 50–50 joint venture with Balmain Tigers to form the Wests Tigers.
