Jim Jordan (conjure Doctor)
James Spurgeon Jordan ( ; June 3, 1871 – January 28, 1962) was an American conjure doctor and businessman. Born to former slaves in eastern North Carolina, he learned folk healing practices from his family. His faith healing practice, using methods such as herbal medicine and crystal ball reading, became well known along the East Coast. This and his other business endeavors developed a community around him known as "Jordanville". Early life Jordan was born in 1871 in Hertford County, North Carolina, the first son and fourth of eleven children of parents who were born into slavery. His father, Isaac, was a sharecropper and lay preacher after emancipation. His mother, Harriet (''née'' Hill), who was thought to be of Black Indian descent, was a homemaker and weaver and introduced her son to folk medical traditions. Hertford County, North Carolina
Hertford County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 21,552. Its county seat is Winton. It is classified within the region known in the 21st century as the Inner Banks. History Hertford County is home of the Meherrin Indian Tribe, descendants of indigenous people who had inhabited the region for many centuries. After decades of encroachment by English colonists, the Tribe moved south from Virginia, where they settled in 1706 on a reservation abandoned by the Chowanoke. This six-square-mile reservation was at Parker's Ferry near the mouth of the Meherrin River. It was confirmed by a treaty of 1726. However, they were not able to keep the reservation lands. The Tribe today has approximately 900 enrolled members, most living within 10–15 miles of the former reservation. The tribe is recognized by the state and is seeking Federal recognition. Sandlot Baseball
Sandlot ball or sandlot baseball is a competitive and athletic sports game that follows the basic rules and procedures of baseball. It is often less organized and structured, as the name alludes to a makeshift field or an empty lot. History and origins It is thought that the term ''sandlot'' dates all the way back to the 1850s, originating in the city of San Francisco. At the time, a vacant lot sat near the San Francisco City Hall. This sandy lot became a place where workers and other citizens would meet and speak and voice their opinions. This in-town park and empty lot next to City Hall also became a place where various sports could be played in a free and undisclosed area. Eventually the sport extended to lots all across the city of San Francisco (until the 1940s when there were no more made available or suitable enough for the game). Johnson Publishing Company, Inc. (JPC) was an American publishing company founded in November 1942 by African-American businessman John H. Johnson. It was headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. JPC was privately held and run by Johnson until his death in 2005. His publications "forever changed the popular representation of African Americans." The writing portrayed African Americans as they saw themselves and its photojournalism made history. Led by its flagship publication, ''Ebony'', Johnson Publishing was at one time the largest African-American-owned publishing firm in the United States. JPC also published '' Jet'', a weekly news magazine, from November 1951 until June 2014, when it became digital only. In the 1980s, the company branched into film and television.
