Jim Flynn (footballer)
James Edward Flynn (21 March 1871 – 24 August 1955) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong and Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL). A ruckman, after two brief VFA stints, the Benalla-born Flynn started his career in earnest in 1897 where he was part of Geelong's inaugural VFL side. Flynn stayed with the club until the end of the 1902 season when he crossed to Carlton. He was made Carlton captain in 1905, and in 1906 led them to the premiership, defeating Fitzroy in the Grand Final. Due to business commitments in St James, running the local hotel (pub) which still operates today (37 kilometres north of Benalla), he retired from football; however, he returned for the 1907 finals series after captain Fred Elliott was suspended. Benalla
Benalla is a small city located on the Broken River gateway to the High Country north-eastern region of Victoria, Australia, about north east of the state capital Melbourne. At the the population was 10,822. It is the administrative centre for the Rural City of Benalla local government area. History Prior to the European settlement of Australia, the Benalla region was populated by the Taungurung people, an Indigenous Australian people. A 1906 history recounts that prior to white settlement "as many as 400 blacks would meet together in the vicinity of Benalla to hold a corrobboree". The area was first sighted by Europeans during an expedition of Hamilton Hume and William Hovell in 1824 and was noted as an agricultural settlement called "Swampy". Fred Elliott (footballer)
Frederick Clifford "Pompey" Elliott (7 April 1879 – 3 August 1960) was an Australian rules footballer in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Fred was the first VFL player to reach 200 games and was elected to the Carlton Hall of Fame in 1988. Family Fred was born in Carlton with the name Frederick Clifford Saggers to William Constantine Saggers (1824-1880) and Florence Mary Woodliffe Willcox (1857-1929), who had married in 1876. He was only a few months old when his 56 year old father died. Fred's mother was only 23 years old at the time and quickly re-married. The new husband's name was Frederick Giddons Anson Elliott (1859-1920). Baby Fred was given his stepfather's surname. He married Florence May Windsor (1879-1959) at St Thomas's Essendon on 26 September 1906. The newly married couple went to live at 1 Pascoe Vale Road, Moonee Ponds. Lake Rowan is a locality in northern Victoria, Australia. It is in the local government area of the Shire of Moira. The locality is named for "Lake Rowan"—a reserve with a dry swamp. Tanking in sports refers to the practice of intentionally fielding non-competitive teams to take advantage of league rules that benefit losing teams. This is a much more common practice in American sports that utilize closed leagues than in sports leagues in other nations, which typically penalize poor performers using a promotion and relegation system, in which the worst teams after each season are sent to a lower-tiered league and replaced with that league's best teams. Relegation costs teams revenue and makes it more difficult for them to attract top talent, making tanking unfeasible. Tanking teams are usually seeking higher picks in the next draft, since league rules generally give the highest draft picks to the previous season's worst teams. Teams that decide to start tanking often do so by trading away star players in order to reduce payroll and bring in younger prospects.
