James Farley
James Aloysius Farley (May 30, 1888 – June 9, 1976) was an American politician and Knight of Malta who simultaneously served as chairman of the New York State Democratic Committee, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and Postmaster General under President Franklin Roosevelt, whose gubernatorial and presidential campaigns were run by Farley. Farley was commonly referred to as a political kingmaker, as he was responsible for Roosevelt's rise to the presidency. He was the campaign manager for New York State politician Alfred E. Smith's 1922 gubernatorial campaign and Roosevelt's 1928 and 1930 gubernatorial campaigns as well as Roosevelt's presidential campaigns of 1932 and 1936. Farley predicted large landslides in both, and revolutionized the use of polling data. He was also a business executive and dignitary. James Farley (actor)
James Farley (January 8, 1882 – October 12, 1947) was an American character actor of the silent and sound film eras. Biography Born in Waldron, Arkansas, on January 8, 1882, Farley made his film debut in the 1916 silent film ''Sins of Her Parent''. During his thirty-year film career he appeared in over 200 films and film shorts, including over 175 feature films. Farley worked right up until his death; his final film was released after his death, 1948's '' The Man from Texas''. The production of the film ended in early June 1947, and Farley died shortly after, on October 12, 1947, in Pacoima, California. James Indus Farley (February 24, 1871 – June 16, 1948) was an American educator, businessman, and a three-term member of the United States Congress from Indiana from 1933 to 1939. Biography Born on a farm near Hamilton, Indiana, he attended Tri-State College in nearby Angola, and Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. After four years of teaching school, he went to work for the Auburn Automobile Company and rose to become the company's president. Political career In 1928, he entered politics as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. He was elected to Congress in 1932 from the Fourth District, defeating incumbent Republican David Hogg. He was re-elected twice before losing to Republican George W. Gillie in 1938. James Lewis Farley (9 September 1823 – 12 November 1885), was an Irish banker, diplomat and writer on Eastern affairs. Early life Farley was the only son of Thomas Farley of Meiltran, County Cavan, was born at Dublin on 9 September 1823. He was destined for the legal profession, and studied at Trinity College. His attention, however, was early directed to Turkey and the East. Banking career After the conclusion of the Crimean war and the signing of the peace of Paris in 1856, the Ottoman Bank was formed through the efforts of English capitalists. Farley accepted the post of chief accountant of the branch at Beirut, which he assisted in successfully establishing.
