James Carr (Massachusetts Politician)
James Carr (September 9, 1777 – August 24, 1818), son of U.S. Congressman Francis Carr, was a member of the United States House of Representatives from Maine, then a District of Massachusetts. Carr was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, on September 9, 1777. He attended Phillips Exeter and Byfield Academies, and then went to sea as clerk on the U.S.S. Crescent. He served two years as secretary to the United States Consul at Algiers. He then joined his parents (who had migrated to Bangor, Maine), engaging in mercantile pursuits and serving as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1806–1811) for the District of Maine. Carr was elected as a Federalist to the Fourteenth United States Congress (1815–1817), the second person from Bangor to occupy that office (following his father). James Dickson Carr
James Dickson Carr (September 28, 1868 – July 24, 1920) was an American lawyer and the first African American assistant district attorney in New York state history, serving New York County from 1899 to 1901. Carr was also the first African American to graduate from Rutgers University, in 1892. Biography Born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1868, Carr attended public schools in New Haven, Connecticut, and Elizabeth, New Jersey. In 1886 he entered the Rutgers Grammar School, graduating as valedictorian two years later. He received a bachelor's degree from Rutgers College in New Brunswick in 1892, becoming the school's first Black graduate. A talented student, he delivered a commencement speech and joined the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He boarded with a white student and seems to have faced little overt racism at college. Jim Carr
James Gordon Carr (October 11, 1951 – December 12, 2022) was a Canadian politician, cabinet minister, journalist, and professional oboist. A member of the Liberal Party, he served as the member of Parliament for Winnipeg South Centre from 2015 until his death on December 12, 2022. Carr died days after his Private Members Bill, Bill C-235, ''An Act respecting the building of a green economy in the Prairies,'' passed the House and went to the Senate. He last served as the Chair of the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security, until his resignation on September 29, 2022. Carr previously served as the Minister of Natural Resources from 2015 to 2018, and Minister of International Trade Diversification from 2018 to 2019. He left Cabinet in 2019 after being diagnosed with cancer, but soon after was named the Special Representative for the Prairies. James Emmet "Jimmy" Carr (January 28, 1955 – August 15, 2013) was an American freestyle and folkstyle wrestler. Carr was the youngest Olympian in U.S. wrestling history, competing at the 1972 Summer Olympics while still in high school as a 17-year-old. He also placed sixth at the senior level 1971 World Wrestling Championships at 114.5 pounds as a 16-year-old. Carr was a Junior World Champion in 1973. James Henry Carr (March 25, 1933 – August 13, 2012) was an American football player who played nine seasons for the Chicago Cardinals, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins of the National Football League (NFL). Carr also played one season in the Canadian Football League with the Montreal Alouettes in 1958. He was the starting left corner with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1960 when they won the World Championship beating the Green Bay Packers. He played college football at Morris Harvey (now the University of Charleston) in Charleston, West Virginia. While there he played in three bowl games and was one of three NAIA Hall of Fame inductees in 1962. He also played high school football and baseball at East Bank High School in East Bank, West Virginia. Jimmy Carr (footballer)
James Edward Charles Carr (19 December 1893 – 26 June 1980) was a Scottish footballer who played at outside left for Reading and Southampton in the 1920s. He was also a bowls player who competed for England at the Commonwealth Games. Football career Carr was born in Maryhill, Glasgow, but started his football career as a youth playing for Watford Orient, before joining Watford as a 14-year-old in 1908. He made his Southern League debut for Watford at the age of 16. He moved to fellow Southern League club, West Ham United, in 1914 and made nine appearances in the 1914–15 season. During World War I he was enlisted into the Army and played as a guest for Portsmouth and Kilmarnock in the wartime leagues. After the cessation of hostilities, Carr joined Reading in 1919, where he formed an "exciting partnership" on the left with Len Andrews. James Edward Carr (June 13, 1942 – January 7, 2001) was an American R&B and soul singer, described as "one of the greatest pure vocalists that deep Southern soul ever produced." Biography Born to a Baptist preacher's family in Coahoma, Mississippi, he moved with his parents to Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of three. Carr began singing in church, and performed in gospel groups including the Harmony Echoes, at the same time as making tables on an assembly line in Memphis. After being turned down by Stax, he made his first recordings for Goldwax Records, a small Memphis-based independent record label, in 1964. James Mackay Carr (c. 1864 – 31 March 1942), always known as Jimmy Carr, was an Adelaide bookmaker. History As a young man he worked for Sir John Morphett at Cummins, South Australia, and the horse trainer John Henry Hill (died 15 August 1918) at Rhine Street, St Leonards (now Glenelg North). He eventually became one of South Australia's biggest bookmakers, operating from the Globe Hotel, Rundle Street, before the new Tattersalls Club was built. Sometime before 1900 he took on the young Sol Green as an assistant, and Green credited Carr with giving him his first real start. When Green returned to Melbourne, 18 months later, George Nelson took his place. Changes in legislation forced the on-course bookmakers out of business, and Carr and Nelson became wood and charcoal merchants, building up a large clientele in a remarkably short time.
