Jim Barkhouse
James Alfred Barkhouse (born May 3, 1940) is a former hardware store owner and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Lunenburg East and then Chester-St. Margaret's in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1984 to 1998 as a Liberal member. Early life and education He was born in Chester, Nova Scotia and studied at Acadia University. Before politics Barkhouse served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1958 to 1963 and worked at Sperry Gyroscope and Hermes Electronics. He was owner and manager of Reddens Hardware from 1971 to 1987. Political career Barkhouse entered provincial politics in the 1984 election, winning the Lunenburg East seat. He was re-elected in the 1988 election. In the 1993 election, Barkhouse was re-elected in the new riding of Chester-St. Margaret's. Chester, Nova Scotia
Chester is a village on the Chester Peninsula, Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada. The nearby waters of Mahone Bay and its numerous islands are well known for yachting and have made the Chester Yacht Club into a cruising destination. A provincial ferry from the village provides a schedule of daily trips to Big Tancook Island and Little Tancook Island. History The French had been present in Acadia since the early 1600s, but when the British expanded into the area in the 1700s, Acadian settlements on the South Shore were few and tiny. After the Expulsion of the Acadians the British wanted to repopulate vacated lands, and offered land grants to colonists from New England, which was experiencing a population explosion. The 1988 Nova Scotia general election was held on September 6, 1988 to elect members of the 55th House of Assembly of the Province of Nova Scotia, Canada. The 1998 Nova Scotia general election was held on March 24, 1998 to elect members of the 57th House of Assembly of the Province of Nova Scotia, Canada. The Liberal party and the New Democratic Party tied in the seat count, with 19 each, while the Progressive Conservatives won 14 seats. The Liberals went on to form a minority government with the support of the Progressive Conservatives. Background Liberal Premier John Savage was elected in a landslide in 1993. The Liberals inherited a $471-million deficit, and launched an austerity program which cut the province's health and education systems. On April 1, 1997, the provincial government imposed a 15% Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) which merged the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) and the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The Executive Council of Nova Scotia (informally and more commonly, the Cabinet of Nova Scotia) is the cabinet of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. Almost always made up of members of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, the Cabinet is similar in structure and role to the Canadian Cabinet while being smaller in size with different portfolios. The Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, as representative of the King in Right of Nova Scotia, heads the council, and is referred to as the Governor-in-Council. Other members of the Cabinet, who advise, or minister, the viceroy, are selected by the Premier of Nova Scotia and appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor.
