Jewel Lafontant
Jewel Stradford Lafontant-Mankarious (April 28, 1922 – May 31, 1997) was the first female (and African American female) deputy solicitor general of the United States, an official in the administration of President George H. W. Bush, and an attorney in Chicago. She also was considered by President Richard Nixon as a possible nominee to the Supreme Court of the United States. Early life and education Born in Chicago as Jewel Carter Stradford, she was the daughter of noted attorney and co-founder of the National Bar Association, C. Francis Stradford, and Aida Arabella Stradford. She was a descendant of the 19th century American artisan, Scipio Vaughan, and his wife, Maria Conway, from whom she acquired Yoruba people, Yoruba Nigerian people, Nigerian, Native American people, Native American and Scottish people, Scottish ancestries. Jonathan Moore (10 September 1932 – 8 March 2017) was United States Director of the Bureau of Refugee Programs from 1987 to 1989 and United States Representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Council from 1989 to 1992. Biography Jonathan Moore was born in New York City on September 10, 1932. He was educated at Dartmouth College, receiving a bachelor's degree in 1954 and at Harvard University, receiving an MPA in 1957. The Bright Promises Foundation is a nonprofit organization providing services to disadvantaged children in Illinois History The organization was founded as the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in 1869. It added children to its mission in 1877, changing its name to the Illinois Humane Society. The 1960 United States presidential election was the 44th quadrennial presidential election. It was held on Tuesday, November 8, 1960. In a closely contested election, Democratic United States Senator John F. Kennedy defeated the incumbent Vice President Richard Nixon, the Republican Party nominee. This was the first election in which fifty states participated, and the last in which the District of Columbia did not, marking the first participation of Alaska and Hawaii.
