William Stanley Jevons
William Stanley Jevons (; 1 September 183513 August 1882) was an English economist and logician. Irving Fisher described Jevons's book ''A General Mathematical Theory of Political Economy'' (1862) as the start of the mathematical method in economics. It made the case that economics, as a science concerned with quantities, is necessarily mathematical. In so doing, it expounded upon the "final" (marginal) utility theory of value. Jevons' work, along with similar discoveries made by Carl Menger in Vienna (1871) and by Léon Walras in Switzerland (1874), marked the opening of a new period in the history of economic thought. Jevons's contribution to the marginal revolution in economics in the late 19th century established his reputation as a leading political economist and logician of the time. Phil Jevons
Phillip Jevons (born 1 August 1979) is an English football coach and former professional footballer. As a player, he was a forward who played between 1996 and 2014 for Everton, Grimsby Town, Hull City, Yeovil Town, Bristol City, Huddersfield Town, Bury, Morecambe, Hyde and Stockport County. Jevons came through the youth academy at Premier League side Everton and was promoted to the club's first team squad in 1996. He made only 8 league appearances before being sold to Grimsby Town in 2001. It was whilst a Grimsby player that he is notably remembered for scoring a last minute 30-yard extra time winning goal for The Mariners against his home town club Liverpool in the third round of the League Cup in 2001 which gave The Mariners a 2–1 victory at Anfield, having initially being 1–0 down. Jevons Paradox
In economics, the Jevons paradox (; sometimes Jevons effect) occurs when technological progress or government policy increases the efficiency with which a resource is used (reducing the amount necessary for any one use), but the falling cost of use increases its demand, increasing, rather than reducing, resource use. The Jevons' effect is perhaps the most widely known paradox in environmental economics. However, governments and environmentalists generally assume that efficiency gains will lower resource consumption, ignoring the possibility of the effect arising. In 1865, the English economist William Stanley Jevons observed that technological improvements that increased the efficiency of coal use led to the increased consumption of coal in a wide range of industries. Frank Byron Jevons
Frank Byron Jevons (1858–1936) was a polymath, academic and administrator of Durham University. Early life He was educated at Nottingham High School and Wadham College, Oxford and appointed a lecturer in Classics at Durham in 1882. Career He was the first Censor of St Cuthbert's Society from 1892 until 1897, a role he performed with "skill and humanity". In 1897 he was appointed as Principal of Bishop Hatfield's Hall (retitled master in 1919 when it became Hatfield College), where he remained until 1922. He was the first principal not to be seen ordained clergyman. He also served as treasurer of the university from 1898 to 1902, as sub-warden from 1902 to 1909, as vice-chancellor of the university between 1910 and 1912 and pro vice-chancellor between 1912 and 1914 and 1916 to 1921. Frederic Jevons
Frederic Raphael Jevons (born 19 September 1929 in Austria as Frederic Raphael Bettelheim, died 30 September 2012 in Melbourne) was a British Professor of biochemistry and later an Australian educator. He was informally known as Fred Jevons and since 1977 lived and worked mostly in Australia. Early life Born in Austria in 1929, Jevons survived the Holocaust by being sponsored by a family in England to attend a boarding school in Norfolk. The young Bettelheim was educated at Norwich High School for Boys, joining the household of his school's headmaster, Mr J. H. W. Jevons, from whom he took his new surname. During the Second World War, the school moved from Norwich to Loddon and changed its name to Langley School. His parents, Hedwig and Fritz Bettelheim, survived WWII by escaping from Austria to Venezuela, but were separated from their children for some ten years. Marshall Jevons
Marshall Jevons is a fictitious name, fictitious crime writer invented and used by William L. Breit and Kenneth G. Elzinga, professors of economics at Trinity University (Texas), Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas, San Antonio, and the University of Virginia, respectively. It was Breit's notion to write a mystery novel in which an amateur detective uses economic theory to solve crimes. Elzinga was enthusiastic about his colleague's idea and not only encouraged him to proceed but also decided to take an active role in writing the book. Over the next twenty years, on top of their academic schedules, Breit and Elzinga co-wrote four mystery books featuring Harvard University, Harvard economist-sleuth Henry Spearman (fictional character), Henry Spearman.
