Jesup (Amtrak Station)
Jesup is a railroad station in the city of Jesup, Wayne County, Georgia, United States. Located at 176 Northwest Broad Street, the station is currently in use for service on Amtrak's ''Silver Meteor'' and bypassed by their ''Silver Star''. Amtrak service began on October 1, 1979, when the ''Silver Meteor'' was realigned away from a station on State Route 32 at Thalmann, Georgia. The station was built in 1899 as part of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. In February 2003, the station was damaged in a fire and subsequently boarded up as the town sought funds for restoration. In 2005, Jesup received $836,000 in federal funds after the rehabilitation was designated a High Priority Project under the federal transportation bill. The city also purchased the building and land from CSX Transportation, owner of the adjacent railroad line. The city decided to return the building to its early 20th-century appearance. Jesup, Georgia
Jesup is a city in Wayne County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,809 at the 2020 census. The city is the county seat of Wayne County. History By February 1869, Willis Clary had begun building a two-story hotel near the junction of Macon and Brunswick Railroad and the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad and four stores had sprung up in the area. Clary became a driving force for the establishment of what would become Jesup and was its first mayor. By September 1869, the town included five stores, a sawmill, and a railroad eating house in addition to Clary's hotel. By December 1869 the community had become known as Jesup. Jesup was named for Thomas Jesup, a general during the Second Seminole War. The area was then part of Appling County, Georgia. State Route 32 (SR 32) is a state highway that travels west-to-east through portions of Terrell, Lee, Worth, Turner, Irwin, Coffee, Bacon, Pierce, Brantley, and Glynn counties in the southern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. The highway connects Dawson with Sterling, via Leesburg, Ashburn, Fitzgerald, Douglas, and Alma. Atlantic Coast Line Railroad
The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad was a United States Class I railroad formed in 1900, though predecessor railroads had used the ACL brand since 1871. In 1967 it merged with long-time rival Seaboard Air Line Railroad to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. Much of the original ACL network has been part of CSX Transportation since 1986. The Atlantic Coast Line served the Southeast, with a concentration of lines in Florida. Numerous named passenger trains were operated by the railroad for Florida-bound tourists, with the Atlantic Coast Line contributing significantly to Florida's economic development in the first half of the 20th century. The ''Silver Meteor'' is a passenger train operated by Amtrak between New York City and Miami, Florida. Introduced in 1939 as the first diesel-powered streamliner between New York and Florida, it was the flagship train of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad and one of its flagship trains of its successor, the Seaboard Coast Line.
