Jesse Hunt
Jesse Hunt (July 3, 1793 – December 8, 1872) was Mayor of Baltimore from November 1832 to August 11, 1835. He resigned office following a banking crisis in which, as a director of the failed bank, he was personally implicated. Early life Jesse Hunt was born on July 3, 1793, in Green Spring Valley, Baltimore County, Maryland. He was a descendant of a pioneer family of Calvert County. His father moved from Calvert County to Green Spring Valley in 1760. In 1808, he served as an apprentice at the house of William and Richard Hall, a saddlery in Baltimore. Career Hunt enlisted in the volunteer army and helped raise the company Washington Blues, a division attached to the 5th Maryland Regiment and was at the Battle of North Point in 1814 during the War of 1812. He later became a lieutenant and resigned his commission in 1822. In 1815, Hunt started to work in the saddlery and harness-making business. William Steuart (Mayor Of Baltimore)
William Steuart (1780 – February 12, 1839) was a stone mason in colonial Maryland, and Mayor of Baltimore from 1831 to 1832. He was a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army during the War of 1812, and saw service during the Battle of Baltimore, where he commanded the 38th United States Infantry foot regiment. Personal life Steuart was born in 1780 in Baltimore, Maryland to Robert Steuart. He was brought up as a stonemason by his father and his uncle Hugh and became a Freemason, joining Concordia Lodge No. 13. He married Elizabeth Hagerty of Alexandria, Virginia and had five sons and two daughters. Baltimore Bank Riot
The Baltimore bank riot of 1835 in the major port city of Maryland was a violent reaction to the failure of the Bank of Maryland in 1834. Thousands of citizens had lost millions of dollars in savings. The riot, which lasted from 6 to 9 August, attacked the homes and property of a number of former directors of the bank, who had been accused of financial misconduct and fraud, as well as the federal district courthouse located on Battle Monument Square. The Baltimore bank riot was one of the most violent and destructive events of civic unrest in any American city prior to the Civil War. Rioters destroyed many of the homes of the city's wealthiest and most prominent citizens, and much valuable property was smashed or burned, but was later restored. Reverdy Johnson (May 21, 1796February 10, 1876) was a statesman and jurist from Maryland. He gained fame as a defense attorney, defending notables such as Sandford of the Dred Scott case, Maj. Gen. Fitz John Porter at his court-martial, and Mary Surratt, alleged conspirator in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. A former Whig, he was a strong supporter of the Union war effort. At first he opposed wartime efforts to abolish slavery until 1864, and in 1865 supported the 13th Amendment banning slavery.
