Jesmond
Jesmond is a suburb of Newcastle upon Tyne, situated to the east of the Town Moor. Jesmond is considered to be one of the most affluent suburbs of Newcastle upon Tyne, with higher average house prices than most other areas of the city. History According to local tradition, some time shortly after the Norman conquest there occurred in the valley of the Ouse an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The ruins of St Mary's Chapel, first recorded in 1272, are in Jesmond Dene on the west side of the valley. A trace of the processions to the shrine which occurred during the Middle Ages is found in the name of that section of the former Great North Road running north of the Tyne called Pilgrim Street. During a period in which the shrine was in need of repair it was endowed with indulgences by a rescript or edict of Pope Martin V on certain feasts of the liturgical year. Jesmond Dene
Jesmond Dene, a public park in the east end of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, occupies the narrow steep-sided valley of a small river known as the Ouseburn, flowing south to join the River Tyne: in north-east England, such valleys are commonly known as denes: the name 'Jesmond' meaning 'mouth of the Ouseburn'. Lord Armstrong and his wife, of the now-demolished Jesmond Dean (sic) house nearby, first laid out the park during the 1860s. The design is intended to reflect a rural setting, with woodland, crags, waterfalls and pools. Lord Armstrong gave the park to the people of Newcastle in 1883 and it opened to the public in the following year. It is now owned by Newcastle City Council. The current Jesmond Dene House adjoining the dene was the mansion of Armstrong's business partner Andrew Noble. It is now a luxury hotel. Jesmond Parish Church
Jesmond Parish Church is a parish church in the Church of England situated in Brandling Village in the Jesmond suburb of Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, England. The church's official name is the Clayton Memorial Church and is unusual among Anglican parish churches in not being named after either a saint who appears in the church's calendar or a person of the Trinity. This reflects the church's conservative Evangelical roots. It is a grade II listed building. History The church had a slightly unusual beginning. 1856 saw the death of the Revd Richard Clayton, Master of St Thomas' Church in Haymarket and a local Evangelical luminary. In his place the church authorities wished to appoint a high church successor who was out of sympathy with Clayton's Reformed Evangelical principles. Holy Name Parish, Jesmond
The Holy Name is a parish of the Roman Catholic Church located in the Jesmond suburb in Newcastle upon Tyne. History On 1 December 1901, the parish was founded. The place of worship was established in a leased house at 68 Manor House Road. On 18 January 1903, a temporary iron church was opened on St George's Terrace. It served as the main chapel for almost 27 years. In 1922, a parish hall called "Osborne Hall" was built. Osborne Hall is now part of the Jesmond swimming baths. A new church was planned and construction began on 24 June 1928. The church By 1929, Holy Name Church, with a capacity for 400 people, was built. Osborne Avenue
Osborne Avenue is a cricket ground in Jesmond, Tyne and Wear. It was originally known as the Constabulary Ground. It is currently the home ground of Newcastle Cricket Club, Royal Grammar School Newcastle and Northumberland County Cricket Club. History The first cricket match was played there in 1887, though the first recorded match was in 1894, when Northumberland played a minor match against FGH Clayton's XI. In 1897, the ground hosted its first Minor Counties Championship match when Northumberland played Durham. From 1897 to the present day, Osborne Avenue has hosted 457 Minor Counties Championship and 24 MCCA Knockout Trophy matches. Two first-class matches have been played on Osborne Avenue, the first of which came in 1965 when a combined Minor Counties team played the touring South Africans, a match which the South Africans won by 243 runs. William George Armstrong, 1st Baron Armstrong
William George Armstrong, 1st Baron Armstrong, (26 November 1810 – 27 December 1900) was an English engineer and industrialist who founded the Armstrong Whitworth manufacturing concern on Tyneside. He was also an eminent scientist, inventor and philanthropist. In collaboration with the architect Richard Norman Shaw, he built Cragside in Northumberland, the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity. He is regarded as the inventor of modern artillery. Armstrong was knighted in 1859 after giving his gun patents to the government. In 1887, in Queen Victoria's golden jubilee year, he was raised to the peerage as Baron Armstrong of Cragside. Tyne and Wear () is a metropolitan county in North East England, situated around the mouths of the rivers Tyne and Wear. It was created in 1974, by the Local Government Act 1972, along with five metropolitan boroughs of Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside. It is bordered by Northumberland to the north and Durham to the south; the county boundary was formerly split between these counties with the border as the River Tyne. Arthur Sutherland
Sir Arthur Munro Sutherland, 1st Baronet, KBE (2 October 1867 – 29 March 1953), of Hethpool House, Kirknewton, Northumberland, was an English shipowner and philanthropist. Sutherland was the son of Benjamin John Sutherland, a shipping merchant of Thurso House, Newcastle upon Tyne. He was educated at the Royal Grammar School, Newcastle and in 1884 joined the shipbrokers Lindsay, Gracie & Co as a clerk. He left to open a steamer department in his father's firm, later turning it into a successful cargo shipping business, B. J. Sutherland & Co. He was chairman of that firm and several other shipping operators. Later, Sutherland was owner of the ''Newcastle Chronicle'' newspaper between 1920 and 1925. Town Moor, Newcastle Upon Tyne
The Town Moor is an area of common land in Newcastle upon Tyne. It covers an area of around , making it larger than Hyde Park and Hampstead Heath combined. It is also larger than New York City's Central Park (843 acres). The Town Moor reaches Spital Tongues and the city centre to the south, Gosforth to the north and Jesmond to the east (where it meets Exhibition Park). Freemen of the city have the right to graze cattle on the Town Moor. The rental income is distributed through the Town Moor Money Charity. The ornithologist and landscape architect John Hancock, after whom the nearby Hancock Museum is named, produced a planned layout for the Town Moor in 1868, which was only partly realised.
