The County of Jervois is a cadastral unit in the Australian state of South Australia that covers land on the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula. It was proclaimed on 24 January 1878 and named after William Jervois, the Governor of South Australia from October 1877 to January 1883. Description The county covers the part of the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula overlooking the Spencer Gulf from Murninnie Beach in the north and Cape Hardy in the south, and which extends inland from the coastline for a distance of about in the north, and about in the south. It is bounded by the counties of Le Hunte, Buxton and York to the north (from west to east), by the County of Musgrave to the west and by the County of Flinders to the south. The county includes the towns of Cowell, Arno Bay, Port Neill, Darke Peak, and Rudall. Jervois, South Australia
Jervois is a town in South Australia, on the right (western) bank of the lower Murray River. Jervois is predominantly a farming community, especially dairy farming on the floodplain and gently rising ground behind it. Jervois is located in the Rural City of Murray Bridge local government area, southeast of the state capital, Adelaide and on the opposite bank of the Murray from Tailem Bend, with a cable ferry carrying vehicles across the river between the two towns. In contrast to Jervois, Tailem Bend is high on cliffs above the left bank of the river. Jervois was surveyed in 1927 and named after the governor of South Australia, William Jervois. The Port River (officially known as the Port Adelaide River) is part of a tidal estuary located north of the Adelaide city centre in the Australian state of South Australia. It has been used as a shipping channel since the beginning of European settlement of South Australia in 1836, when Colonel Light selected the site to use as a port. Before colonisation, the Port River region and the estuary area were known as Yerta Bulti (or Yertabulti) by the Kaurna people, and used extensively as a source of food and plant materials to fashion artefacts used in daily life. Jervois Street (, formerly ) is a street in the Sheung Wan district of Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. History On 28 December 1851, a fire broke out and burned down Sheung Wan Market and hundreds of Chinese houses all around it, resulting in 30 deaths. Fort Jervois
Ripapa Island ( mi, Rīpapa), also known earlier as Ripa Island, located just off the shore of Lyttelton Harbour, has played many roles in the history of New Zealand. A Māori fortified pā there played a key role in an internal struggle for the South Island Ngāi Tahu tribe in the early 19th century. Between 1873 and 1885, the island hosted a quarantine station, which was also used as a temporary prison for members of the Parihaka Māori settlement in Taranaki. Fort Jervois was built in 1886 as part of system of defences against a feared Russian invasion. The fort was in military use until the end of World War I, and again during World War II. General William Jervois KH (1782 – 5 November 1862) was Commander and Lieutenant Governor of Hong Kong. Jervois Street in Hong Kong was named after him. Military career Jervois served in the Peninsular War and, having been promoted to Lieutenant General in 1846, went on to be Commander and Lieutenant Governor of Hong Kong in 1851. William Jervois
Lieutenant General Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois (10 September 1821 – 17 August 1897) was a British military engineer and diplomat. After joining the British Army in 1839, he saw service, as a second captain, in South Africa. In 1858, as a major, he was appointed Secretary of a Royal Commission set up to examine the state and efficiency of British land-based fortifications against naval attack; and this led to further work in Canada and South Australia. From 1875 to 1888 he was, consecutively, Governor of the Straits Settlements, Governor of South Australia and Governor of New Zealand.
