Jerome M. Hughes
Jerome M. Hughes (October 1, 1929 – June 26, 2015) was an American educator and politician. Background Hughes graduated from Cretin High School. He then received his bachelor's degree from University of St. Thomas, his master's degree from University of Minnesota, and his doctorate from Wayne State University. Hughes taught in high school and was a coach. He was a community educator administrator and public policy consultant with the St. Paul School District. He also taught at the University of Minnesota. Political career From Maplewood, Minnesota, Hughes was elected to the Senate in 1966, and served for 26 years in the body. He became chair of the education committee in 1973, and was elected President of the Senate in 1983, a position he would hold—save for during a special session in 1987—for the remainder of his time in office. Florian Chmielewski
Florian W. Chmielewski Sr. (February 10, 1927 – April 23, 2024) was an American musician and politician. He played as an accordion player with the Chmielewski Family Funtime Band, performing polka music throughout the midwest. Chmielewski was elected to the Senate in 1970, becoming chair of the employment committee in 1981. During a special session in 1987, Chmielewski was elected to serve as president, due to the absence of State Sen. Jerome M. Hughes, who both preceded and succeeded Chmielewski in the position. The president of the Minnesota Senate is the presiding officer of the Minnesota Senate. Until 1973, the Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota served as the Senate president. Since then, presidents have been elected by the body, usually at the nomination of the majority. Allan Spear
Allan Henry Spear (June 24, 1937 – October 11, 2008) was an American politician and educator from Minnesota who served almost thirty years in the Minnesota Senate, including nearly a decade as President of the Senate. Biography Spear was born to a Jewish family. A graduate of Oberlin College (B.A., 1958), he went on to earn an M.A. and a PhD from Yale University (1960 and 1965 respectively). Decades later, Oberlin would also award him an honorary LL.D. He was first elected to the Minnesota Senate in 1972, representing a liberal Minneapolis district centered on the University of Minnesota. Cretin-Derham Hall High School (CDH) is a private, co-educational Catholic high school in Saint Paul, Minnesota operated by the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis.
