Jeremiah Thomas McCarthy (born 20 July 1941) is a retired British rower who competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Rowing career McCarthy participated in the 1970 World Rowing Championships The 1970 World Rowing Championships was the 3rd World Rowing Championships. It was held in 1970 at the Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. The competition involved seven events. Rowing (sport)
Rowing, sometimes called crew in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower holds two oars—one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain, called eights. There are a wide variety of course types and formats of racing, but most elite and championship level racing is conducted on calm water courses long with several lanes marked using buoys. The 1972 Summer Olympics (), officially known as the Games of the XX Olympiad () and commonly known as Munich 1972 (german: München 1972), was an international multi-sport event held in Munich, West Germany, from 26 August to 11 September 1972. The event was overshadowed by the Munich massacre in the second week, in which eleven Israeli athletes and coaches and a West German police officer at Olympic village were killed by Palestinian Black September members. The motivation for the attack was the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The 1972 Summer Olympics were the second Summer Olympics to be held in Germany, after the 1936 Games in Berlin, which had taken place under the Nazi regime, and the most recent Olympics to be held in the country. The 1970 World Rowing Championships was the 3rd World Rowing Championships. It was held in 1970 at the Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Background The International Rowing Federation (FISA) held a congress in conjunction with the 1967 European Rowing Championships in Vichy, France. At that congress, it was decided that the 1970 World Championships would be held outside of Europe, and that Canada was likely be chosen as host. Patrick Delafield
Patrick Geoffrey Robert "Pat" Delafield (born 14 April 1946) is a British former rower and businessman. He competed for Great Britain in the 1972 Summer Olympics. Education and rowing career Delafield was educated at Cambridge University where he studied Law. He rowed for Cambridge in The Boat Race in the 1966, 1967 and 1968 races. In 1968 with Delafield as president, Cambridge started a streak of six consecutive wins. In 1970 Delafield was runner up in the Diamond Challenge Sculls at Henley Royal Regatta. He participated in the 1970 World Rowing Championships competing in the doubles sculls event with Jeremiah McCarthy where they finished in seventh place overall after winning the B final. In 1972 he partnered Tim Crooks to win the Double Sculls Challenge Cup at Henley and won the double sculls with Crooks, at the inaugural 1972 National Rowing Championships. Matthew Michael Kenneth Cooper (17 April 1948 – 11 October 2015) was a British rower. Cooper competed at the 1968 Summer Olympics where he finished in tenth place in the men's eight. Vesta Rowing Club
Vesta Rowing Club is a rowing club based on the Tideway of the River Thames in Putney, London, England. It was founded in 1870. Vesta organises two head races every year; the Scullers Head and the Veterans Head. History Foundation Vesta Rowing Club was founded in 1870. It is said that during the club's inaugural meeting, members decided that the club should be named after the first boat to pass under London Bridge. The first boat, a steam tug, to pass under the bridge was ''Vesta''. The club's first home was Salters Boathouse which was a part of Feathers Pub on the Wandle which flows into the Tideway just west of Wandsworth Bridge. In 1875, the club moved to the Unity boathouse (now the Ranelagh Sailing Club) and from there to its present clubhouse next door in 1890. To begin with, the Vesta only raced in-house. 1972 British Rowing Championships
The 1972 National Rowing Championships was the first edition of the National Championships, held from 22 to 23 July 1972 at the National Water Sports Centre in Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham. These inaugural Championships were held at the newly opened National Watersports Centre in Nottingham. The Wallingford pair of Tony Norris and Doug Richardson won the junior pair and finished second behind Mike Hart and David Maxwell in the senior pair. Hart & Maxwell would compete at the Olympics shortly afterwards.
