Jens R. Nilssen
Jens Richard Nilssen (11 August 1880 – 28 February 1964) was a Norwegian illustrator, comics creator and cartoonist. Nilssen was born in Valberg, Nordland, Valberg, Nordland, and was educated at Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry, Statens håndverks- og kunstindustriskole) in Oslo, Kristiania, at the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts, and at Peder Severin Krøyer's painting school in Copenhagen. He delivered illustrations to the satirical magazines ''Hvepsen'', ''Karikaturen'' and ''Humoristen'', as well as the weekly magazine ''Nynorsk Vekeblad'' and the children's magazine ''Norsk Barneblad''. Valberg, Nordland
Valberg (formerly ''Valdberg'') is a List of former municipalities of Norway, former municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1927 until 1963. The municipality covered the southeastern coast of the island of Vestvågøya in what is now Vestvågøy Municipality. The administrative centre was the village of ''Valberg'' where Valberg Church is located. Hans Aarnes (6 May 1886 – 25 October 1960) was a Norwegian entrepreneur, journalist, newspaper editor, magazine editor, publisher and proponent for the Nynorsk language. Early and personal life Aarnes was born in Vatne, Møre og Romsdal as the son of farmer Kristen Nilsson Aarnes and Marta Kristensdotter Vestre. He graduated as shipper in 1904, and worked as a seaman, trader and fisher. In 1907 he published the one-act play ''Sundagskveld'', and in 1933 he published the poetry collection ''Kviteburd''. ''Vangsgutane'' (translation: ''The Boys from Vangen'') is a Norwegian comic strip. It was started in 1940, after initiative from Hans Aarnes, editor of the magazine ''Nynorsk Vekeblad''. The strip first appeared in ''Nynorsk Vekeblad'' in October 1940, and from 1941 as a separate Christmas album. Text writer was Leif Halse, and the first illustrator of the strip was Jens R. Nilssen, who made the drawings from 1940 to 1957. Later illustrators were Atle Steinsfjord, Bjarne Kristoffersen, Ivar Pettersen and John Thoresen. The last original strip was made in 1981, and Halse, the creator of the series, died in 1984. From 1982 there have been published annual reissues of albums from the series. Andreas Haavoll
Andreas Haavoll (25 September 1869 – 6 March 1958) was a Norwegian schoolteacher, banker, publisher, newspaper editor and magazine editor. Haavoll was born in Ørsta. He was a teacher by education, and worked as schoolteacher and banker for about twenty years. He was assigned with various newspapers, and founded the newspaper ''Nordmør'' in 1903. He was a co-founder of Det Norske Teatret in 1912, and edited the newspaper ''Den 17de Mai'' from 1913 to 1917. He published the children's magazine ''Norsk Barneblad'' from 1912, and edited the magazine from 1916 to 1954. Smørbukk
''Smørbukk'' is a Norwegian comic strip. It was started in 1938 by text writer Andreas Haavoll and illustrator Jens R. Nilssen. The first Smørbukk story was based on the fairytale Buttercup collected by Asbjørnsen and Moe. The strip appears in the children's magazine '' Norsk Barneblad'', as well as in separate albums. From 1959/1960 to 1983 the series was illustrated by Solveig Muren Sanden. Later text writers have been Øyvind Dybwad and Johannes Farestveit. From 1983 Håkon Aasnes took over as illustrator. The anniversary book ''Smørbukk 70 år'' was published in 2008. Legacy In 1973 Solveig Muren Sanden and Johannes Farestveit received the first Comics Prize awarded by the Norwegian Ministry of Culture. A comic strip is a sequence of drawings, often cartoons, arranged in interrelated panels to display brief humor or form a narrative, often serialized, with text in balloons and captions.
