Jen Shyu
Jen Shyu (; born March 28, 1978) is an American experimental jazz vocalist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, dancer, and producer. Early life and education Shyu was born on March 28, 1978, in Peoria, Illinois, the child of Taiwanese and East Timorese immigrants. She was classically trained in piano, violin, and ballet, and performed with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra at the age of 13. Shyu studied theater and opera at Stanford University. Musical career Shyu's seven albums as leader or co-leader include 2011's ''Synastry'', the first woman-led record released by Pi Recordings, and ''Sounds and Cries of the World'' (Pi 2015), reviewed favorably by ''The New York Times'' and ''The Wall Street Journal'' and included in annual best-of lists in both ''The New York Times'' and ''The Nation''. David Binney
David Binney (born August 2, 1961) is an American alto saxophonist and composer. Early life Binney was born in Miami, Florida, and was raised in Carpinteria, California. From his parents, who loved music, he was exposed to albums by John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, and Jimi Hendrix. He took saxophone lessons in Los Angeles. Career When he was nineteen, he moved to New York City and studied with saxophonists George Coleman, Dave Liebman, and Phil Woods. A grant from the National Endowment for the Arts helped him record his first album, ''Point Game''. In the 1990s, he started his own label, Mythology Records. Garin Nugroho Riyanto (born 6 June 1961) is an Indonesian film director. Biography Nugroho was born in Yogyakarta, Special Region of Yogyakarta on 6 June 1961. He was the fourth child of postal workers Soetjipto Amin and Mariah, who eventually had seven children. As a child, he attended an Islamic elementary school, later attending Catholic secondary schools. His father owned a lending library and enjoyed writing, leading Nugroho to start writing from a young age; he later quit writing because he felt his father to be too critical. Bimhuis
The Bimhuis is a concert hall for jazz and improvised music in Amsterdam. With an average of 150 performances a year the Bimhuis is the main stage for these musical genres in the Netherlands. In 2017 it was also a host for the 17th edition of the Sonic Acts Festival. The Bimhuis was founded in 1973 and opened on October 1, 1974.
