Jellyfish Lake
Jellyfish Lake ( pau, Ongeim'l Tketau, lit=Fifth Lake) is a marine lake located on Eil Malk island in Palau. Eil Malk is part of the Rock Islands, a group of small, rocky, mostly uninhabited islands in Palau's Southern Lagoon, between Koror and Peleliu. There are about 70 other marine lakes located throughout the Rock Islands. Millions of golden jellyfish migrate horizontally across the lake daily. Jellyfish Lake is connected to the ocean through fissures and tunnels in the limestone of an ancient Miocene reef. However the lake is sufficiently isolated and the conditions are different enough that the diversity of species in the lake is greatly reduced from the nearby lagoon. Eil Malk
Eil Malk or Mecherchar is the main island of the Mecherchar Islands, an island group of Palau in the Pacific Ocean. In a more narrow sense, just the southeastern peninsula of Mecherchar is called Eil Malk. Geography Eil Malk is located 23 kilometers southwest of Koror near the fringing reef of Palau. The neighbor island is Ngeruktabel. This densely wooded island has the shape of a letter Y, is up to 6 km long and 4.5 km wide. There are more than 10 small lakes on the island. Most well known is the Jellyfish Lake in the east of the island. Eil Malk is uninhabited, but there has been at least one village, perhaps three villages in the period between 1200 and 1450. Zooxanthellae is a colloquial term for single-celled dinoflagellates that are able to live in symbiosis with diverse marine invertebrates including demosponges, corals, jellyfish, and nudibranchs. Most known zooxanthellae are in the genus ''Symbiodinium'', but some are known from the genus '' Amphidinium'', and other taxa, as yet unidentified, may have similar endosymbiont affinities. The spotted jelly (''Mastigias papua''), lagoon jelly, golden medusa, or Papuan jellyfish, is a species of jellyfish from the Indo-Pacific oceans. Like corals, sea anemones, and other sea jellies, it belongs to the phylum Cnidaria. Golden Jellyfish
The golden jellyfish (''Mastigias papua'' cf. ''etpisoni'') is a subspecies of spotted jellyfish (''Mastigias papua'') that inhabits Jellyfish Lake on Eil Malk island in Palau in the western Pacific Ocean. Like the nominate subspecies, it derives part of its nutrition from symbiotic algae (Zooxanthellae) that live in their tissues and part of their nutrition from captured zooplankton. The golden jellyfish is morphologically, physiologically, and behaviourally distinct from the spotted jellyfish. It was described as a separate subspecies in 2011, together with four other new subspecies inhabiting nearby marine lakes. ''Aurelia'' is a genus of scyphozoan jellyfish, commonly called moon jellies. There are currently 25 accepted species and many that are still Undescribed taxon, not formally described.
