Jeffrey Hazard
Jeffrey Hazard (1762 – 1840)Caroline Elizabeth Robinson, ''The Hazard Family of Rhode Island, 1635-1894'' (1896), p. 113. was a justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court from May 1810 to May 1818,Manual - the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations' (1891), p. 208-13. and Lieutenant-Governor of Rhode Island from 1833 to 1835, and from 1836 to 1837. Hazard's father, in his will, dated June 1, 1773, probated December 14, 1773, gives "my son Jeffrey all my lands lying in Exeter and in West Greenwich". In addition his service as a supreme court justice and as lieutenant governor, Hazard was also "for many years Representative in the General Assembly, and chief justice of the Court of Common Pleas". Hazard married Amey, daughter of Thomas Tillinghast; she was born in 1773, and died June 3, 1870. They had a large family. Rhode Island Supreme Court
The Rhode Island Supreme Court is the court of last resort in the U.S. State of Rhode Island. The Court consists of a Chief Justice and four Associate Justices, all selected by the Governor of Rhode Island from candidates vetted by the Judicial Nominating Commission. Each justice enjoys lifetime tenure and no mandatory retirement age, similar to Federal judges. Justices may be removed only if impeached for improper conduct by a vote of the Rhode Island House of Representatives and convicted by trial in the Rhode Island Senate. History In 1747, the Rhode Island General Assembly authorized the creation of a Superior Court of Judicature, Court of Assize, and General Gaol Delivery, consisting of one chief justice and four associates, all serving one year terms.
