John Richard Jefferies (6 November 1848 – 14 August 1887) was an English nature writer, noted for his depiction of English rural life in essays, books of natural history, and novels. His childhood on a small Wiltshire farm had a great influence on him and provides the background to all his major works of fiction. Jefferies's corpus of writings covers a range of genres and topics, including ''Bevis'' (1882), a classic children's book, and ''After London'' (1885), a work of science fiction. For much of his adult life he suffered from tuberculosis, and his struggles with the illness and with poverty also play a role in his writing. James Jefferies (born 22 November 1950 in Musselburgh) is a Scottish football manager and former player. Jefferies played for Heart of Midlothian for almost his whole playing career and enjoyed a successful first managerial spell with the club, winning the 1998 Scottish Cup. Jefferies has also managed Gala Fairydean, Berwick Rangers, Falkirk, Bradford City, Kilmarnock and Dunfermline Athletic. Daulton Compton Jefferies (born August 2, 1995) is an American professional baseball pitcher in the Oakland Athletics organization. He played college baseball for the California Golden Bears. He was selected by the Athletics with the 37th overall pick of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft and he made his major league debut in 2020. Career Jefferies attended Buhach Colony High School in Atwater, California, where he both pitched and played shortstop. As a junior in high school, Jefferies was named the Most Valuable Player award in the Central California Conference after pitching to a 8–0 win–loss record with a 1.26 earned run average and putting up a .366/.480/.505 slash line. Gregory Scott Jefferies (born August 1, 1967) is a retired infielder/outfielder in Major League Baseball who had a 14-year career from 1987 to 2000. Christopher Allen Jefferies (born February 13, 1980) is an American former professional basketball player. He played for the Toronto Raptors and the Chicago Bulls in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was named First Team All-Western Athletic Conference, All-Defensive Team and All-Newcomer Team as a sophomore at Fresno State University.
