Jeferson Tenório
Jeferson Tenorio (born 1977) is a Brazilian writer. He was born in Rio de Janeiro and now lives in Porto Alegre. He obtained a PhD in Literary Theory from PUC-RS (Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul). His debut novel ''O beijo na parede'' appeared in 2013 and was elected Book of the Year by Associação Gaúcha de Escritores. His stage texts and short stories have been translated into English and Spanish. His novel ''O avesso da pele'' (2020) won the Prêmio Jabuti. It is coming out in English translation from Charco Press, and has been optioned for translations in Portuguese, Italian, French, Chinese and other languages. One of Tenório’s motives for beginning to write were his many encounters with police brutality. He believed that his writing could be a way to confront the racism present in the South of Brazil as well as the rest of the country. Companhia das Letras is the largest publishing house in São Paulo, Brazil. It was founded by Luiz Schwarcz and his wife Lilia Moritz Schwarcz in 1986. Companhia das Letras began as a literary publishing house and gradually grew into 17 independent publishing units with a broad readership of all ages and industries. Candomblé
Candomblé () is an African diasporic religion that developed in Brazil during the 19th century. It arose through a process of syncretism between several of the traditional religions of West Africa, especially that of the Yoruba, and the Roman Catholic form of Christianity. There is no central authority in control of Candomblé, which is organised through autonomous groups. Candomblé involves the veneration of spirits known as ''orixás''. Deriving their names and attributes from traditional West African deities, they are equated with Roman Catholic saints. Various myths are told about these orixás, which are regarded as subservient to a transcendent creator deity, Oludumaré. On November 19, 2020, João Alberto Silveira Freitas, a 40-year-old black man, died in Porto Alegre, Brazil, after being beaten by security guards at a Carrefour unit in Passo d'Areia neighborhood.
