Jean Mercier (Hebraist)
Jean Mercier, Latin Joannes Mercerus (Uzès ca. 15101570) was a French Hebraist. Mercier was a pupil of the less known François Vatable, and succeeded Vatable as professor of Hebrew at the Collège Royal. His students included Philippe du Plessis-Mornay, Zacharius Ursinus, Andrew Melville, and Pierre Martinius who became professor at La Rochelle. Constantine Harmenopoulos ( el, ; 1320 – ) was a Byzantine jurist from Greece who held the post of '' katholikos kritēs'' ("universal judge") of Thessalonica, one of the highest judicial offices in the Byzantine Empire. He is best known for his ''Hexabiblos'' (1344–1345), a law book in six volumes in which he compiles a wide range of Byzantine legal sources. Hebrew Gospel Of Matthew
The rabbinical translations of Matthew are rabbinical versions of the Gospel of Matthew that are written in Hebrew; Shem Tob's Hebrew Gospel of Matthew, the Du Tillet Matthew, and the Münster Matthew, and which were used in polemical debate with Catholics. These versions are to be distinguished from the Gospel of the Hebrews which was one or more works found in the Early Church, but surviving only as fragmentary quotations in Greek and Latin texts. Some scholars consider all the rabbinical versions to be translated from the Greek or Latin of the canonical Matthew, for the purpose of Jewish apologetics. This conclusion is not unanimous. Other scholars have provided linguistic and historic evidence of Shem Tov's Matthew coming from a much earlier Hebrew text that was later translated into Greek and other languages. Targum Jonathan (), otherwise referred to as Targum Yonasan/Yonatan, is the official eastern (Babylonian) targum (Aramaic translation) to the Nevi'im ("prophets"). It is not to be confused with "Targum Pseudo-Jonathan", an Aramaic translation of the Torah, which is often known as "Targum Jonathan" due to a printer's error. Origin It originated, like Targum Onkelus for the Torah, in the synagogue reading of a translation from the Prophets, together with the weekly lesson. The Talmud attributes its authorship to Jonathan ben Uzziel, a pupil of Hillel the Elder.
