Jean Mannheim
Jean Mannheim (November 18, 1863 – September 6, 1945) was a German-born American artist and educator, known for his California Impressionist paintings. He was active in Decatur, Illinois and Pasadena, California. About Jean Mannheim was born November 18, 1863 in Bad Kreuznach in the Nahe region of Germany. He was drafted into the German Army, and eventually he fled to France. In Paris, he studied art at Académie Delécluse and Académie Colarossi, and under artists Paul-Louis Delance and William-Adolphe Bouguereau. In 1884, he immigrated to Illinois where he taught at the Decatur Art School, some of his students in Decatur included artists Roy Brown and Charles Crocker. In the 1880s, he married Pauline McNett from the small city Mendota, but the marriage ended in divorce. In 1902, he married Eunice Drennan of Decatur, the sister of John Drennan, a longtime publisher of the Decatur Daily Review. Mendota, Illinois
Mendota is a city in LaSalle County, Illinois, United States, in the state's north-central region. The population was 7,061 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Ottawa, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area. Mendota is located approximately 85 miles west of Chicago, 70 miles east of Moline and 55 miles south of Rockford. The current mayor is David W. Boelk, an independent elected to a four-year term. The name "Mendota" is derived from a Lakota word meaning "junction of two trails", which was found appropriate for the city since there was a nearby railroad junction for the Illinois Central Railroad and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. The Arroyo Seco region has been home and inspiration to artists from Los Angeles' boom years of the 1880s to present day. This region of Northeast Los Angeles that borders the Arroyo Seco and the Los Angeles River encompasses Pasadena, Altadena, Highland Park, Garvanza, Mount Washington, and El Sereno. Smith, was an early Arizona impressionist painter of desert landscapes, many of Cochise County and the Grand Canyon. Marie Boening Kendall (1885 – 1953) was an American painter. Life Born in Mount Morris, New York, Kendall studied in New York City under William Merritt Chase. Channel "Chan" Pickering Townsley or C.P. Townsley (1867–1921) was an American painter, art administrator, and educator. The subject and genre of his California Impressionist paintings were landscapes, portraits and still lives. He served as a director of Otis Art Institute (1914–1921) and Stickney Memorial Art School (c.1912–1918). Early life and education Townsley was born on January 20, 1867, in Sedalia, Missouri. His family moved in 1875 to Great Bend, Kansas. He attended Washburn College in Topeka, Kansas. Townsley moved to Paris to continue his study at Académie Delécluse and Académie Julian. Stickney Memorial Art School, also known as Stickney Art Institute and Stickney Memorial School of Fine Arts, was an art school in operation between c.1912 until 1934 in Pasadena, California. The school was an early precursor to the Norton Simon Museum, founded in 1969. History Upon opening in c. 1912, the school was led by Jean Mannheim and Channel Pickering Townsley. In the early years of the school, Townsley served as director and Mannheim served as the sole instructor and the school offered summer classes with a costumed model posed in the open air and offered outdoor landscape painting in winter. The California Art Club (CAC) is one of the oldest and most active arts organizations in California. Founded in December 1909, it celebrated its centennial in 2009 and into the spring of 2010. The California Art Club originally evolved out of The Painters Club of Los Angeles, a short-lived group that lasted from 1906–09.
