Jean-Paul Morrell
Jean-Paul "JP" Morrell (born 1978) is an American Democratic politician and public defender in New Orleans, Louisiana. He has served as an at-large member of the New Orleans City Council since January 2022. Career Morrell was a member of the Louisiana State Senate for District 3 from 2008 to 2020, and briefly served in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 2006 to 2008 representing District 97 to fill the unexpired term of his father, Arthur Morrell. He was re-elected to the House in 2007 and served until 2008, before running for the State Senate. He was elected to the Senate in a special election held on December 6, 2008. He served until 2020. In 2021, Morrell won a seat on the New Orleans City Council representing the Division 2 at-large seat. He succeed Donna Glapion. Morrell faced fellow Democrats Kristin Palmer and Jared Brossett in the November 13, 2021 election for a seat on the City Council, and was elected with an outright majority of 50.7% against Palmer's 31. ... New Orleans City Council
The New Orleans City Council is the legislative branch of the City of New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. The current mayor-council form of city government was created in 1954, following the 1950 amendment of the state constitution that provided for a home rule charter for the city. The 1954 Charter provided for seven members, five elected from single-member districts, and two elected at-large, replacing the 1912 Charter, which provided for a commission form of government with a mayor and four commissioners. The council members are elected to four-year terms, using the two-round system. The President and the Vice President of the Council are chosen by the council at its organizational meeting on the day members take office following the election. Cynthia Hedge-Morrell (born September 4, 1947) is an African-American teacher, a former school administrator, and a Democratic politician from New Orleans, Louisiana. She served on the New Orleans City Council from 2005 to 2014. Education Hedge-Morrell holds a Bachelor of Administration in Elementary Education from the University of New Orleans and a Master of Science from Loyola University New Orleans. Political life Hedge-Morrell was elected to New Orleans City Council in a special election on April 2, 2005. Hedge-Morrell instead defeated a Republican candidate, Eustis J. Guillemet, Jr. (born January 1934), 4,959 votes (84.5 percent) to 912 (15.5 percent). Hedge-Morrell was re-elected in 2006 but with a reduced majority. Louisiana's 3rd State Senate district is one of 39 districts in the Louisiana State Senate. It has been represented by Democrat Joseph Bouie Jr. since 2020, succeeding fellow Democrat Jean-Paul Morrell. Geography District 3 covers some of eastern New Orleans (primarily Gentilly, West Lake Forest, and the Lower Ninth Ward), as well as smaller parts of St. Bernard and Jefferson Parishes, including some or all of Chalmette, Arabi, Harvey, and Marrero. The Louisiana House of Representatives (french: link=no, Chambre des Représentants de Louisiane) is the lower house in the Louisiana State Legislature, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Louisiana. This chamber is composed of 105 representatives, each of whom represents approximately 42,500 people (2000 figures). Members serve four-year terms with a term limit of three terms (twelve years).
