Jean-Joseph Denis
Jean-Joseph Denis (January 27, 1876 – September 22, 1960) was a Canadians, Canadian lawyer, judge and political figure in Quebec. He represented Joliette (electoral district), Joliette in the House of Commons of Canada from 1917 to 1928 as a Liberal Party of Canada, Liberal. He was born in Saint-Cuthbert, Quebec, the son of Gaspard Denis and Eugènie de Grandpré, and was educated at the Université Laval. He was called to the Bar of Quebec, Quebec bar in 1901 and practised in Montreal until 1903 and then in Berthierville, Quebec, Berthier. He was an unsuccessful candidate for a seat in the House of Commons in 1911, losing to Joseph-Pierre Guilbault. In 1912, he was named King's Counsel. Denis was elected in 1917 as a Laurier Liberals, Laurier Liberal. He resigned his seat in the House of Commons 1928 after he was named puisne judge in the Quebec Superior Court. King's Counsel
In the United Kingdom and in some Commonwealth countries, a King's Counsel (post-nominal initials KC) during the reign of a king, or Queen's Counsel (post-nominal initials QC) during the reign of a queen, is a lawyer (usually a barrister or advocate) who is typically a senior trial lawyer. Technically appointed by the monarch of the country to be one of 'His erMajesty's Counsel learned in the law', the position originated in England and Wales. Some Commonwealth countries have either abolished the position, or renamed it so as to remove monarchical connotations, for example, ' Senior counsel' or 'Senior Advocate'. Prior to the 1917 federal election in Canada, the Liberal Party of Canada split into two factions. To differentiate the groups, historians tend to use two retrospective names: * The Laurier Liberals, who opposed conscription of soldiers to support Canada's involvement in World War I and who were led by former Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier; and * The Liberal Unionists who joined Sir Robert Borden's Unionist government.
