Jean-Claude Lemagny
Jean-Claude Lemagny (born 24 December 1931–19 January 2023) was a French library curator and historian of photography; a specialist in contemporary photography, he contributed to the world of fine-art photography in several roles. Early life and education Born 24 December 1931 in Versailles, oldest of the three children of Paul Lemagny (a winner of the Prix de Rome) and Léonie Leloup, Jean-Claude Lemagny achieved a series of academic landmarks; a License in History and Geography, a Certificate in French Literature, a Certificate in Art of the Middle Ages, a Superior Studies Diploma in the History of Art, and an Aggregation in History, which is a prestigious professional qualification as a teacher. Emmanuel Sougez
Louis-Victor-Emmanuel Sougez (16 July 1889 - 24 August 1972) was a French photographer. Sougez was born in Bordeaux, and enrolled at age 15 at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, where he studied art, but soon abandoned that to concentrate on photography. From 1905 to 1914, he travelled widely, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland. After the First World War, became a freelance photographer, based in Paris. There he formed the group ' Le Rectangle' which exhibited modern photography and with some of its members, after the war, helped establish its successor, Le Groupe des XV, then in the 1950s joined Les 30 x 40. In 1926, Sougez founded the photographic department for the French weekly newspaper, ''L'Illustration'', and promoted the use of colour photography. Paul Joyce
Paul Joyce (born 1940, or 1941 or 1944) is a British photographer and filmmaker. His portraits of artists are held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London and his Welsh landscape photographs are held in the collection of Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales. Life and work Joyce was born in Winchester, Hampshire. Between 1976 and 1979 he visited Wales on several occasions, resulting in a touring exhibition and a catalogue. Lucien Clergue
Lucien Clergue (; 14 August 1934 – 15 November 2014) was a French photographer. He was Chairman of the Academy of Fine Arts, Paris for 2013. Biography Lucien Clergue was born in Arles, France. At the age of 7 he began learning to play the violin, and after several years of study his teacher admitted that he had nothing more to teach him. Clergue was from a family of shopkeepers and could not afford to pursue further studies in a college or university school of music, such as a conservatory. In 1949, he learned the basics of photography. Four years later, at a corrida in Arles, he showed his photographs to Spanish painter Pablo Picasso who, though subdued, asked to see more of his work. Within a year and a half, young Clergue worked on his photography with the goal of sending more images to Picasso. Josef Sudek
Josef Sudek (17 March 1896 – 15 September 1976) was a Czech photographer, best known for his photographs of Prague. Life Sudek was born in KolÃn, Bohemia. He was originally a bookbinder. During the First World War he was drafted into the Austro-Hungarian Army in 1915 and served on the Italian Front until he was wounded in the right arm in 1916 which led to the limb being amputated at the shoulder. After the war he studied photography for two years in Prague under JaromÃr Funke. His army disability pension gave him leeway to make art, and he worked during the 1920s in the romantic Pictorialist style. Always pushing at the boundaries, a local camera club expelled him for arguing about the need to move forwards from 'painterly' photography. Jean-Pierre Sudre
Jean-Pierre Sudre (; September 27, 1921 – September 6, 1997) was a commercial photographer. Biography Sudre was born in Paris but later moved to the south of France. There he devoted his life to workshops of fine art photography. Photography Sudre's subject-matter was mainly the still-life and figure. He is best known for his experimentation with chemicals, and is credited with the creation of Mordançage (tr. 'etching', ' scouring'), though he built the process on the film reversal technique first documented in 1897 by Paul Liesegang and known as etch-bleach, bleach-etch, gelatin relief, or reverse relief. Raoul Hausmann
Raoul Hausmann (July 12, 1886 – February 1, 1971) was an Austrian artist and writer. One of the key figures in Berlin Dada, his experimental photographic collages, sound poetry, and institutional critiques would have a profound influence on the European Avant-Garde in the aftermath of World War I.
