Jean-Claude Garoute
Jean-Claude "Tiga" Garoute (December 9, 1935 – December 14, 2006) was a Haitian painter and sculptor. Born in Jérémie, Garoute co-founded a museum of ceramic art in Haiti named Poto-Mitan. An abstract painter, he participated in art festivals throughout the world. Tiga and Maud Guerdes Robard founded the Saint-Soleil post- naïve school of Haitian painting. The school was born when they offered farmers in Soisson-La-Montagne, a rural area near Port-au-Prince, drawing and painting materials. Out of the movement came such painters as Levoy Exil, Louisiane Saint Fleurant, St-Jean, and Dieuseul Paul to name a few. The movement drew the eye of French author André Malraux who dedicated a chapter to it in his book ''L'Intemporel''. In the late 80's Tiga also created Kaytiga, a gallery and cultural center where he taught children and adults art through his ''Rotation Artistique'' (Artistic Rotation) method. Torch (German Rapper)
Frederik Hahn (born September 29, 1971 in Heidelberg), better known by his stage name Torch, is a German rapper. He is also known as DJ Haitian Star. He was among the first German rappers who began rapping in German in the mid-1980s in Heidelberg, laying the foundation for the success of German hip hop music. In 1985, Afrika Bambaataa named him king of the first German chapter of the Zulu Nation and also gave him the title: Overlord of Sound & Culture. Career In 1987, Torch founded the group Advanced Chemistry with Toni L, Linguist, Gee-One and DJ Mike MD. In 1992, the song ''Fremd im eigenen Land'' ("Stranger in one's own country") became the group's first hit. Primarily due to exposure on the cable television network MTV, the song garnered attention outside of Germany's hip hop scene, which was still quite small at the time. Riva Nyri Précil
Riva Nyri Prècil (born March 28, 1989, Brooklyn, New York) is a Haitian-American singer, songwriter, and author. Early life and education Riva Nyri Précil was born in Brooklyn. Her mother, Michelle Karshan, is an American of Lithuanian Jewish and Irish descent and produced and hosted the radio show “Sak Pase” (1991-1995) while her father, Privat Précil was a Haitian who worked in the US as a journalist and lawyer. Riva and her family moved to Haiti when she was five years old as her mother got a job in Haiti. Her mother worked for the Haitian government specifically on foreign press liaising, using her foreign heritage as an advantage to manage the foreign press who visited Haiti. While growing up in Haiti, Riva was exposed to and studied under many of the great masters of Haiti's cultural and artistic scene. Philippe Dodard
Philippe Walter Marie Dodard (born 1954) is a Haitian graphic artist and painter. His works have been exhibited throughout Europe and the Americas. Early life and education Dodard was born in Port-au-Prince in 1954. He received the first prize in drawing at the Petit Séminaire Collège Saint-Martial in 1966. He studied at the PotoMitan Art School with Jean-Claude "Tiga" Garoute, Patrick Vilaire and Frido Casimir. In 1973, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts. After working as layout artist and founding a studio of audiovisual graphic arts, in 1978, he received a scholarship to the International School in Bordeaux, France, enabling him to specialize in pedagogic graphic design. In 1980 he received a scholarship from the Rotary International Foundation and left on tour with the Group Study Exchange of Haiti to give conferences on Haitian culture.
