Jean-Baptiste Descamps
Jean-Baptiste Descamps (; August 28, 1714 – June 30, 1791) was a French writer on art and artists, and painter of village scenes. He later founded an academy of art and his son later became a museum curator. Biography Descamps was born in Dunkirk, and trained by his father to become a Jesuit. Charles Eschard
Charles Eschard (1748 - 1810) was a French painter, draftsman and engraver. Eschard began his art training at the Académie des sciences, belles-lettres et arts de Rouen, Rouen Academy of Arts directed by Jean-Baptiste Descamps. He then went to spend a few years in Holland, where he studied the masterpieces of Flemish masters. Back in France, he exhibited at The Louvre ''View of Marseille: Joust and party on the water'', and ''A view of the port of Harlem''. In 1798 he again exhibited ''A view of Mont Blanc'' and ''A view of Holland around Groningen''. Another picture of the same kind, ''A view of the channel extending around Holland'', was given by the author to the Museum of Rouen. It was approved by the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1783. Charles Eschard, who according to some experts used soft brushstrokes and pleasant colors, also engraved etchings of a number of highly sought after subjects. Arnold Houbraken
Arnold Houbraken (28 March 1660 – 14 October 1719) was a Dutch painter and writer from Dordrecht, now remembered mainly as a biographer of Dutch Golden Age painters. Life Houbraken was sent first to learn ''threadtwisting'' (Twyndraat) from Johannes de Haan, who introduced him to engraving. After two years he then studied art with Willem van Drielenburch, who he was with during the rampjaar, the year 1672. He then studied 9 months with Jacobus Leveck and finally, four years with Samuel van Hoogstraten. In 1685 he married Sara Sasbout, and around 1709 he moved from Dordrecht to Amsterdam. Arnold Houbraken painted mythological and religious paintings, portraits and landscapes. He is best known for the art historical work ''The Great Theatre of Dutch Painters'' (1718–1721). When he died his son Jacob assisted his mother with the last proofs of the manuscript before publishing. Karel Van Mander
Karel van Mander (I) or Carel van Mander I (May 1548 – 2 September 1606) was a Flemish painter, poet, art historian and art theoretician, who established himself in the Dutch Republic in the latter part of his life. Jean-Baptiste Greuze (, 21 August 1725 – 4 March 1805) was a French painter of portraits, genre scenes, and history painting. Biography Early life Greuze was born at Tournus, a market town in Burgundy. He is generally said to have formed his own talent; at an early age his inclinations, though thwarted by his father, were encouraged by a Lyonnese artist named Grandon, or Grondom, who enjoyed during his lifetime considerable reputation as a portrait-painter. Anicet Charles Gabriel Lemonnier (''male''; 6 June 1743 17 August 1824) was a well-known French painter of historical subjects who was active before, during and after the French Revolution. Life Lemonnier was born in Rouen on 6 June 1743. He was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Descamps at the Rouen School of Fine Arts, then of Joseph-Marie Vien, where he had as classmates and friends Jacques-Louis David and François-André Vincent. With a pleasing appearance, much natural wit and excellent recommendations he was soon admitted into the best society in the capital, especially in the salon of Marie Thérèse Rodet Geoffrin, who took a liking to him.
