Jazzaway Records
Jazzaway is a Norwegian record label founded by saxophonist Jon Klette in Oslo, Norway. He is also the main composer/leader in the band Jazzmob. Their CD ''Pathfinder'' (2003) was the first release from the label. The label includes artists and bands such as Crimetime Orchestra, Jazzmob, Morthana, The Core and Sonny Simmons. Close Erase
Close Erase (initiated 1995 in Trondheim, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz group, comprising Per Oddvar Johansen (drums), Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (bass) and Christian Wallumrød (piano). Biography Close Erase play an experimental jazz fusion inspired by musicians like Paul Bley and Svein Finnerud. The first two album releases were ''Close Erase'' (1996) and ''No.2'' (1999) on the label NorCD, with Audun Kleive as producer. They turned electric on the third album ''Dance This'' (2002) that was nominated for the Spellemannprisen and was acclaimed by the magazines ''The Wire'' and ''Jazzwise'' before their London debut September 10, 2002, and was "shocked by this highly original trio". The fourth album release was ''Sport Rocks'' (2006), with an increasingly hard-swinging and electronic style à la Supersilent. Trondheim Jazz Orchestra
Trondheim Jazz Orchestra (TJO) (established 1999 in Trondheim, Norway) is an orchestral project based in Trondheim, and closely related to both the Midtnorsk Jazzsenter (MNJ - Mid Norwegian Jazz Center) and Jazz Line at the Trøndelag Conservatory of Music ( NTNU). Biography During the 1990s the orchestra was a plain conservatory-band (Konsen Big Band). In 2000 the name of the band was changed to TJO. An important feature with Trondheim Jazz Orchestra is the band's flexible and varying size crew. The orchestra works on a project basis and performs mainly commissioned works of selected composers. The Core (band)
The Core (established 1999 in Trondheim, Norway) is a Norwegian Jazz band, known from a series of recordings. It was initiated by the drummer Espen Aalberg, and are performing music in the Coltrane/ Shorter tradition. (in Norwegian) Biography Their musical expression are rooted in African-American music, with a touch of funk and rock. After releasing the album ''Vision'' (2004), with music inspired by Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler and John Coltrane, (by Tor Hammerø, in Norwegian) they followed up with ''Blue sky'' (2006), with music composed by Steinar Raknes and Espen Aalberg, and some guitar contributions by Nils-Olav Johansen. The Core has made their presence at most of the Norwegian Jazz festivals, where they have been joined by a number of guest soloists, such as James Carter, Jonas Kullhammar, Per Johansson and Håkon Kornstad. Svein Olav Herstad
Svein Olav Herstad (born 7 July 1969 in Odda, Norway) is a jazz pianist, known from his own bands and several recordings with musicians like Sonny Simmons, Jan Erik Kongshaug, Nils-Olav Johansen, Harald Johnsen, and Per Oddvar Johansen. Career Herstad studied music at Musikkskolen in Haugesund, and is a graduate from the Jazz program at Trondheim Musikkonsevatorium, (1990–93). He started the band Svein Olav Herstad trio during his studies in Trondheim. With different lineups the band has released a series of albums, performing Herstad's own compositions. After moving to Oslo (1996–2001) he played within Jan Erik Kongshaug's quartet on two albums (1998, 2003). Living in Haugesund from 2001, he has been engaged with the festival Sildajazz, as well as being a part of the Christina Bjordal Band. Sam Newsome
Sam Newsome (born April 28, 1965) is an American jazz saxophonist, composer, and educator. His music combines straight-ahead jazz, world music (drawing influences from North Africa and East Asia) and experimental jazz, which uses extended techniques. Newsome is an associate professor of music and the coordinator of the music program at Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus. Biography Early life Newsome was born in Salisbury, Maryland and began playing the alto saxophone at age nine. His family moved to Hampton, Virginia years later while he was in elementary school. At age 13, Newsome switched to the tenor saxophone when he joined his junior high school jazz ensemble. Per Zanussi (born 1977) is an Italian–Norwegian jazz musician (upright bass) and composer, known from several bands and releases such as with Hamid Drake, Louis Moholo, Paal Nilssen-Love, Bobby Bradford, Sabir Mateen, Franklin Kiermyer, Stephen O'Malley, Axel Dörner, Petter Wettre, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Bugge Wesseltoft, Mats Gustafsson, Kjetil Møster, Kevin Norton, Ivar Grydeland, Ernesto Rodrigues, Tetuzi Akiyama, and Håvard Wiik. Lucian Ban
Lucian Ban (born 1969) is a Romanian-American jazz pianist. Biography Raised in the tiny farming village of Teaca (Transylvania, Romania), Ban grew up listening to folk songs performed at weddings, birthdays, holidays, and other celebrations. At the age of seven, he moved to Cluj, where he started classical piano and composition training. He studied composition at Bucharest Music Academy from 1992 to 1995. He established the group Jazz Unit in 1995 and released two albums as a leader for Green Records in Romania. In 1999 he moved to New York City, where he studied for two years at New School University. Jon Eberson
Jon Arild Eberson (born 6 January 1953) is a Norwegian jazz guitarist and composer, the son of jazz guitarist Leif Eberson (1925–1970), and the father of keyboardist Marte Maaland Eberson. He was a member of the bands Moose Loose (1973–77), Radka Toneff Quintet (1975–80), and Blow Out (1977–78). Career Eberson had his debut recording as a guitarist on Ketil Bjørnstad's debut album ''Åpning'' (1972). In 1980 he formed the Jon Eberson Group, supported by vocalist and lyricist Sidsel Endresen. The group attracted attention with ''Jive Talking'' (1981), which was awarded the Spellemannprisen, and ''City Visions'' (1984), but disbanded in 1986. Eirik Hegdal
Eirik Hegdal (born 3 October 1973 in Gjøvik, Norway) is a Norwegian Jazz musician (saxophone), composer, arranger and music teacher, known from the band Dingobats (1995-2005) and as leader of Trondheim Jazz Orchestra (from 2002). Career After a year at ''Sund folkehøgskole'', he attended the Jazz program at Trondheim Musikkonservatorium (1995–98), where he established the band Dingobats, with Njål Ølnes (tenor saxophone), Thomas Dahl (guitar), Mats Eilertsen (bass) and Sverre Gjørvad (drums), primarily playing Hegdals compositions. Dingobats
Dingobats (established in 1995) is a Norwegian Jazz band, composed of students from Jazz program at Trondheim Musikkonsevatorium. The band leader, saxophonist, composer and music arranger Eirik Hegdal, is also known for his cooperation with Trondheim Jazz Orchestra performing with Pat Metheny and Chick Corea. Biography Dingobats is very much part of the new wave of jazz that has come out of Norway the past decade.
