Jay Miller (anthropologist)
Jay Miller is an American anthropologist who is known for his wide-ranging fieldwork with and scholarship about different Native American groups, especially the Delaware (Lenape), Tsimshian, and Lushootseed Salish. He is himself of Lenape ancestry. He grew up in upstate New York, where he was given a Mohawk (Iroquois) name. As an undergraduate, he was influenced by the anthropologist Florence Hawley Ellis. He received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University, for a dissertation on the Keresan Pueblo people. While in New Jersey, he began working with speakers of the Delaware language. In this context he was adopted and named in the Delaware Wolf clan, his clan mother being Nora Thompson Dean, with whom he collaborated on a publication on the Delaware "Big House" rite. Friendship with the anthropologist Viola Garfield while living in Seattle led to fieldwork among the Tsimshian at Hartley Bay, British Columbia, where Miller was adopted into the Gispwudwada (Killerwhale clan). Jay Julian Miller (July 19, 1943 – April 5, 2001) was an American forward in the National Basketball Association. Miller first played for the St. Louis Hawks before being selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1968 NBA Expansion Draft. Jay Miller (ice Hockey)
Jay Miller (born July 16, 1960) is an American former ice hockey player. He played for the Boston Bruins and Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL) between 1985 and 1992. Early life Raised in Natick, Massachusetts, Miller played college hockey with the New Hampshire Wildcats. Career Miller was selected by the Quebec Nordiques in the fourth round, 66th overall in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. Miller never got a chance to show his skills with the Nordiques however, spending a few seasons with a handful of minor league teams. In 1985, the 6'2 left winger signed as a free agent with the Boston Bruins and made the team that year as their enforcer. In the 1985-86 season he played in 46 games and collected 178 penalty minutes. During his stint with the Boston Bruins, Miller was known for his many fights with John Kordic. Jay Miller is the former head coach of the Hofstra Pride softball team which represents Hofstra University in the Colonial Athletic Association. He was previously head coach of the softball teams at Purdue, Oklahoma City, Missouri, and Mississippi State. Coaching career Miller began coaching at Purdue after finishing his master's degree there. He then spent 3 seasons as an assistant coach at Missouri, helping lead the Tigers to two appearances in the Women's College World Series. Miller then moved on to Oklahoma City University, where he led the Stars to two appearances in the NAIA Women's College World Series, including a runner-up finish in 1986. Miller was also the pitching coach for the Netherlands Antilles team at the 1987 Pan American Games. The Yard Theatre is a theatre and music venue in a converted warehouse in Hackney Wick in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It programmes theatre and performance, late-night music events, and manages two community centres where it runs work with young people and its local community. History The Yard was founded by Artistic Director Jay Miller in 2011, with support from Tarek Iskander, Sasha Milavic Davies and Alex Rennie. They worked with architectural firm Practice Architecture to convert a disused warehouse into a theatre and bar.
