Jay Marshall (baseball)
Jay William Marshall (born February 25, 1983) is a former professional baseball relief pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball with the Oakland Athletics in 2007 and 2009. Marshall grew up in St. Louis. He is the son of Rich and Debby Marshall. He graduated from John F. Kennedy Catholic High School (Manchester, Missouri) in 2001. He played against future St Louis Cardinals legend David Freese for his first 3 years. Then the two of them played for an age-11 tournament team that went to Tokyo, Japan to play in an international tournament. David was named the outstanding pitcher in that tournament. Early career Marshall was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 25th round (750th overall) in the 2002 Major League Baseball Draft. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. Submarine (baseball)
In baseball, a submarine is a pitch in which the ball is released often just above the ground, but not underhanded, with the torso bent at a right angle, and shoulders tilted so severely that they rotate around a nearly horizontal axis. This is in stark contrast to the underhand softball pitch in which the torso remains upright, the shoulders are level, and the hips do not rotate. Designated for assignment (DFA) is a contractual term used in Major League Baseball (MLB). A player who is designated for assignment is immediately removed from the team's 40-man roster, after which the team must within seven days, return the player to the 40-man roster, place the player on waivers, trade the player, release the player, or outright the player from the 40-man roster into Minor League Baseball. Sacramento River Cats
The Sacramento River Cats are a Minor League Baseball team of the Pacific Coast League (PCL) and are the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. Prior to 2015, the River Cats were the Triple-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics for 15 years. They are based in West Sacramento, California, and play their home games at Sutter Health Park which opened in 2000 and was known as Raley Field through 2019. Sacramento was previously represented in the Pacific Coast League by the Solons, a charter member of the league which was founded in 1903.
