Jay Douglas (reggae)
Jay Douglas is a Canadian musician, based in Toronto. He is a long-time member of the Toronto music scene. Early life Douglas was born in Jamaica. Douglas spent his childhood in Montego Bay, Jamaica, where he first performed. He moved to Toronto, Ontario to join his mother in 1963 when he was a teenager. Career According to a 2012 profile in '' Now'' magazine, Douglas' first Canadian performances were at Toronto's Central Technical School, when he was a student there. His first professional group was The Cougars, a funk band. Since then, Douglas has performed steadily at clubs and festivals all over Ontario. He has performed at Toronto's Massey Hall, Roy Thompson Hall, and the Glenn Gould Studio. In 2012 his album ''Lovers' Paradise'' was one of that year's five Juno nominees for best reggae album. Reggae Lane
Reggae Lane is a roadway in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, that runs east from Oakwood Avenue, behind a strip of buildings on the south side of Eglinton Avenue in the Little Jamaica ethnic enclave. For most of its history it had no official name, but the imminent arrival of Oakwood LRT station helped trigger its 2015 official naming. The neighbourhood near Reggae Lane was recognized as a centre for reggae recording as early as the late 1960s. Toronto Transit Commission chair Josh Colle, the councillor for that part of the city, played a prominent role in the lane's renaming, and in the allocation of funds for clean-up and redevelopment. He asserted that the neighbourhood around the Laneway is the largest centre for the recording of reggae music, outside of Jamaica. The Toronto Jazz Festival is a jazz event in Toronto which takes place for 10 days in late June through early July. Unlike the Beaches International Jazz Festival, most of the events are indoors and located throughout the downtown core. The hub of the festival is Nathan Phillips Square, with more than 40 other locations spread out all across the city. It attracts over 500,000 people and is the city's third largest annual music festival next to NXNE and The Beaches International Jazz Festival. Incorporating a blend of jazz styles - from straight-ahead to bop to fusion to avant-garde- with tastes of other genres (for example, blues, funk, R&B, hip-hop, Latin, etc...) the festival has something for everyone. The Juno Awards of 2020, the 49th Juno Awards, was an awards presentation that was to be held at SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on 15 March 2020. The awards and associated events were cancelled due to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada, making it the first Juno Awards since 1988 to be cancelled.
