Jasper Mall
Jasper Mall is an enclosed shopping mall located in Jasper, Alabama, United States, approximately northwest of Birmingham. History The mall opened on August 8, 1981. It currently is approximately in size, and includes two anchors and about 10 smaller stores. Originally developed by the local Simmons family and Georgia developer George Ewing, the mall is owned by Kohan Retail. Anchor JCPenney moved from downtown to the mall when it opened. The local paper has reported that it is unusual for a mall to have Kmart as an anchor. Sharp Development Group, led by Sam Sharp, purchased the mall from Jasper Mall Associates in 1996. Third anchor Belk opened an approximately store in March 2002. This was part of an expansion of the mall by Sharp Realty. Jasper, Alabama
Jasper is a city in and the county seat of Walker County, Alabama, United States. Its population was 14,352 as of the 2010 census. Named in honor of Sergeant William Jasper, an American Revolutionary War hero, Jasper was settled around 1815 and incorporated on August 18, 1886. The first significant growth of the area was in 1886, when the Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad and the Sheffield & Birmingham Railroads were completed through Jasper. The population grew from 200 people in 1886 to more than 3,000 in 1890. In a special edition in 1891, the ''Mountain Eagle'' stated there were six coal mines, two sandstone quarries, 400 coke ovens, one foundry and machine shop, two saw mills, one brick works, four hotels, and two banks. ''Jasper Mall'' is a 2020 American documentary film directed by Bradford Thomason and Brett Whitcomb. It revolves around the Jasper Mall, a dying mall in Jasper, Alabama. Synopsis ''Jasper Mall'' often revolves around Mike McClelland, a former zookeeper, who serves as the mall's superintendent and works in a security and caretaking role. The mall, which opened in 1981, has recently lost two of its anchors, Kmart and JCPenney. As a result, foot traffic has declined and the parking lot is often barren. The only remaining anchor store is Belk and according to one shopper, "If Belk goes, we are in deep woo-woo."
