Jasper Knight
Jasper Knight (born 25 December 1978, Sydney) is an Australian artist. He is the brother of writer and presenter Dominic Knight, and grandson of Sir Harold Knight (economist). Knight has been a finalist eight times in the Archibald Prize from 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2019 and 2022, with portraits were of Richard Gill, Bob Carr, his grandfather Sir Harold Knight, Bill Wright AM, Jason Phu, Adam Cullen and Abdul Abdullah respectively, aside from himself. He has been a finalist in the 2005, 2006, 2011 and 2012 Wynne Prize for landscape painting, and the 2013 and 2015 Sir John Sulman Prize. He won the Mosman Art Prize in 2008. In 2012 Knight was a finalist for the first time in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize with a portrait of Australian painter Jeffrey Smart and in 2014 with a portrait of David Griggs. Australians
Australians, colloquially known as Aussies, are the citizens, nationals and individuals associated with the country of Australia. Bob Carr
Robert John Carr (born 28 September 1947) is an Australian retired politician and journalist who served as the 39th Premier of New South Wales from 1995 to 2005, as the leader of the NSW Branch of the Australian Labor Party (ALP). He later entered federal politics as a New South Wales senator, and served as Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2012 to 2013. Following his departure from politics he served as the Director of the Australia-China Relations Institute (ACRI) from 2014 to 2019 at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). Carr was born in Sydney and attended the University of New South Wales. Before entering politics he worked as a journalist. Carr entered the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1983, and the following year became a cabinet minister. He served under Neville Wran and Barrie Unsworth until the Labor government was defeated in a landslide at the 1988 state election. Jeffrey Smart
Frank Jeffrey Edson Smart (26 July 1921 – 20 June 2013) was an expatriate Australian painter known for his precisionist depictions of urban landscapes that are "full of private jokes and playful allusions". Smart was born and educated in Adelaide where he worked as an Art teacher. After departing for Europe in 1948 he studied in Paris at La Grande Chaumière, and later at the Académie Montmartre under Fernand Léger. He returned to Australia 1951, living in Sydney, and began exhibiting frequently in 1957. In 1963, he moved to Italy. After a successful exhibition in London, he bought a rural property called "Posticcia Nuova" near Arezzo in Tuscany. He resided there with his partner until his death. His autobiography, ''Not Quite Straight'', was published in 1996. A major retrospective of his works travelled around Australian art galleries 1999–2000. Doug Moran National Portrait Prize
The Doug Moran National Portrait Prize is an annual Australian portrait prize founded by Doug Moran in 1988, the year of Australia's Bicentenary. It is the richest portrait prize in the world with A$150,000 awarded to the winner. The Sir John Sulman Prize is one of Australia's longest-running art prizes, having been established in 1936. It is now held concurrently with the Archibald Prize, Australia's best-known art prize, and also with the Wynne Prize, at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW), Sydney. Landscape Painting
Landscape painting, also known as landscape art, is the depiction of natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests, especially where the main subject is a wide view—with its elements arranged into a coherent composition. In other works, landscape backgrounds for figures can still form an important part of the work. Sky is almost always included in the view, and weather is often an element of the composition. Detailed landscapes as a distinct subject are not found in all artistic traditions, and develop when there is already a sophisticated tradition of representing other subjects. Wynne Prize
The Wynne Prize is an Australian landscape painting or figure sculpture art prize. As one of Australia's longest-running art prizes, it was established in 1897 from the bequest of Richard Wynne. Now held concurrently with the Sir John Sulman Prize and the Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney. It is awarded annually for "the best landscape painting of Australian scenery in oils or watercolours or for the best example of figure sculpture by Australian artists completed during the 12 months preceding the losingdate". Abdul Abdullah
Abdul Abdullah (born 1986) is a Sydney-based Australian multidisciplinary artist, the younger brother of Abdul-Rahman Abdullah, also an artist. Abdul Abdullah has been a finalist several times in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes. He creates provocative works that make political statements and query identity, in particular looking at being a Muslim in Australia, and examines the themes of alienation and othering. Early life and education Born in Perth in 1986, Abdullah is the younger brother of artist Abdul-Rahman Abdullah (born 1977), who lives in rural Western Australia. Their mother is Malay, while their father is Anglo-Australian, and the family is Muslim. Adam Cullen
Adam Frederick Cullen (9 October 1965 – 28 July 2012) was an Australian artist, most known for winning the Archibald Prize in 2000 with a portrait of actor David Wenham. He was also known for his controversial subjects and his distinctive style, sometimes referred to as "grunge". He is the subject of the feature film ''Acute Misfortune'' (2019), co-written, directed and produced by Thomas M. Wright, based on journalist Erik Jensen's 2015 biography of the artist, ''Acute Misfortune: The Life and Death of Adam Cullen''. Early life Cullen was born in Sydney on 9 October 1965.
