Jason Smogorzewski
Jason Smogorzewski (born as Jan Smogorzewski; pl, link=no, Jason Junosza Smogorzewski; 3 May 1715 – 27 September 1788) was the " Metropolitan of Kiev, Galicia and all Ruthenia". He became the first ethnic Polish who headed the Ruthenian Church. Smogorzewski became the first metropolitan to be elected and confirmed following the Russian annexation of Polotsk where he was archbishop. In 1731 he joined the Order of Basilians and changed from Latin-rite to Byzantine-rite. On 31 December 1758 Smogorzewski was ordained by archbishop of Durrës Joseph Schiro (Albanian Greek Catholic Church) as a coadjutor archbishop of Polock becoming a vicar bishop of Vitebsk. On 18 July 1762 he succeeded archbishop Florian Hrebnicki. Following the death of Leo Szeptycki on 24 May 1779, Smogorzewski served as the administrator of the metropolis. Jason Smaharžeŭski
Jason ( ; ) was an ancient Greek mythological hero and leader of the Argonauts, whose quest for the Golden Fleece featured in Greek literature. He was the son of Aeson, the rightful king of Iolcos. He was married to the sorceress Medea. He was also the great-grandson of the messenger god Hermes, through his mother's side. Ruthenian Uniate Church
The Ruthenian Uniate Church ( Belarusian: Руская Уніяцкая Царква; Ukrainian: Руська Унійна Церква; la, Ecclesia Ruthena unita; pl, Ruski Kościół Unicki) was a particular church of the Catholic Church in the territory of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was created in 1595/1596 by those clergy of the Eastern Orthodox Church who subscribed to the Union of Brest. In the process, they switched their allegiances and jurisdiction from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople to the Holy See. The formation of the church led to a high degree of confrontation among Ruthenians, such as the murder of the hierarch Josaphat Kuntsevych in 1623. Heraclius Lisowski
Heraclius Lisovsky or Heraclius Listovsky (born as Józef Lissowski; 1734 – 30 August 1809) was a bishop of the Ruthenian Uniate Church served at first as administrator for Metropolitan see of the Uniate Church in the Russian Empire. Lisovsky was born in a town of Ushachy, Polotsk Voivodeship, Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Lisovsky joined the Order of Saint Basil the Great already after finishing his elementary education. He continued his education in Polotsk specializing in study of philosophy and theology. Eventually Lisovsky became a heguman of Polotsk and then Orsha monasteries. Later he also became a priory member of the Polotsk Uniate Consistory. It was at this position when Lisovsky became acquainted with the Russian Empress Catherine the Great who in 1784 appointed him as the archbishop of Polotsk.
