Jarrahwood is a small town located in the South West region of Western Australia, near the Vasse Highway between Busselton and Nannup. At the 2021 census, the area had a population of nine. History The town is named for the Jarrah Wood and Saw Mills Company which operated in the area and operated a private railway from the district to Wonnerup, which was purchased by the Government in 1906. It was gazetted in 1932. The town lost much of its population after the closure of the local mill in 1982. A newspaper report from around this time described the town as containing "two schools, a hospital, a sizeable town hall, a number of diverse shops, a post office and about 50 company cottages". Nannup, Western Australia
Nannup is a town in the South West region of Western Australia, approximately south of Perth on the Blackwood River at the crossroads of Vasse Highway and Brockman Highway; the highways link Nannup to most of the lower South West's regional centres. At the 2011 census, Nannup had a population of 587. The town is the seat of the Shire of Nannup. History Nannup's name is of Noongar origin, meaning either "stopping place" or "place of parrots", and was first recorded by surveyors in the 1860s. The area was at one point known as "Lower Blackwood", and the first European settler to explore it was Thomas Turner in 1834. In 1866, a bridge was built over the river and a police station was established. A townsite was set aside in 1885, surveyed in 1889 and gazetted on 9 January 1890. Vasse Highway
Vasse Highway is a Western Australian highway connecting Busselton and the South Western Highway south of Manjimup. It is long and travels through jarrah and karri hardwood forests for most of its length, with some small agricultural areas and wineries nearby, and forms the main street of the towns of Nannup (as Warren Road) and Pemberton (as Brockman Street). From Busselton, it starts as State Route 104 from the Bussell Highway 3 km east of Busselton, near the Sir Stuart Bovell sporting complex, and travels the 56 km to Nannup, where it intersects with the Brockman Highway and becomes State Route 10. It then passes Donnelly River and Karri Valley Resort, and 22 km west of Pemberton turnoffs provide entrances to the Beedelup National Park. 2021 Australian Census
The 2021 Australian census, simply called the 2021 Census, was the eighteenth national Census of Population and Housing in Australia. The 2021 Census took place on 10 August 2021, and was conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Nannup Branch Railway
The Nannup Branch Railway, also known as the Wonnerup to Nannup Railway, was a branch line of the Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) between Wonnerup and Nannup. History In 1897 the Jarrah Wood and Saw Mills Company leased the W.A. Timber Company's former timber concession in the South West of Western Australia. The section of the W.A. Timber Company's Ballaarat Tramway route south of the Bunbury-Busselton railway was reused by the Jarrah Wood and Saw Mills Company for the construction of a railway between Wonnerup and Jarrahwood in 1898–99. The line operated until 1903, and was bought by the WAGR in 1907. Residents in the Nannup region were advocating for the extension to the railway in 1905 and in 1909 the Jarrahwood to Nannup line was completed and opened.
