Jaromír Štětina
Jaromír Štětina (6 April 1943 – 17 April 2025) was a Czech journalist, writer and politician. He served as a Member of the European Parliament from 2014 to 2019 for the Czech Republic, representing TOP 09. He was also known as a war correspondent from the conflict areas of the former Soviet Union countries. Biography Štětina was born in Prague on 6 April 1943. From 1961 to 1967, he studied at the Prague University of Economics and Business. From 1965 until 1968, Štětina was a member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. In 1968, he started working as a journalist for the newspaper ''Mladá fronta Dnes'', and his time there coincided with the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia, Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia, during which the Soviet army seized control of the newspaper's offices. Prague Declaration On European Conscience And Communism
The Prague Declaration on European Conscience and Communism was a declaration which was initiated by the Czech government and signed on 3 June 2008 by prominent European politicians, former political prisoners and historians, among them former Czech President Václav Havel and future German President Joachim Gauck, calling for "Europe-wide condemnation of, and education about, the crimes of communism." Much of the content of the declaration reproduced demands formulated by the European People's Party in 2004, and draws heavily on the theory or conception of totalitarianism. The Czech News Agency (), abbreviated to ČTK, is a national public service news agency in the Czech Republic. It provides its services in Czech and English. History ČTK was founded on 28 October 1918, on the same day as Czechoslovakia, as Czechoslovak News Agency. It was formed from several unoffical Czech press agencies, which until then functioned in exile. It published in several languages, including in German together with then-official Czechoslovak. The agency remained throughout both the Nazi and Communist regimes, however, its reporting was highly censored and it served to the regimes' needs. 2019 European Parliament Election In The Czech Republic
The 2019 European Parliament election in the Czech Republic was held on 24 and 25 May 2019, electing the 21 members of the Czech delegation to the European Parliament as part of the European elections held across the European Union. The result was a victory of the populist ruling party ANO ( ALDE), with 21.18 per cent and 6 seats, 2 more seats than in 2014 election. Followed by conservative ODS ( ECR), with 14.54 per cent and 4 seats, marking a notable growth in the election. The Pirate Party also made major gains. SPD ( ENF) gained seats in its first European election, while KDU-ČSL (EPP), TOP 09/ STAN ( EPP) and KSČM ( GUE/NGL) lost seats.
