Japan At The 2016 Summer Olympics
Japan competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. Since the nation's official debut in 1912, Japanese athletes had appeared at every Summer Olympic Games in the modern era, except for two editions; they were not invited to the 1948 Summer Olympics in London because of the nation's role in World War II, and were also part of the United States-led boycott, when Moscow hosted the 1980 Summer Olympics. As Tokyo was the host city of the 2020 Summer Olympics, a Japanese segment was performed during the closing ceremony. The Olympic flag was handed to Yuriko Koike, the Governor of Tokyo from Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, who passed it to IOC President Thomas Bach before handed it to her. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was present in the ceremony, dressed as Nintendo's Mario character. Kōhei Uchimura
is a retired Japanese artistic gymnast. He is a seven-time Olympic medalist (all-around, team and floor exercise), winning three golds and four silvers, and a twenty-one-time World medalist (all-around, team, floor exercise, horizontal bar, and parallel bars). Koji Yamamuro
is a Japanese gymnast. He has won two Olympic medals in the men's artistic team all-around – silver in 2012 (London) and gold in 2016 (Rio de Janeiro). Career Yamamuro won the bronze medal in men's all-around at the 2011 World Championships. Yamamuro competed for the national team at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the Men's artistic team all-around. In the team final, he injured his ankle on the vault event, and had to be helped off. He had qualified for the individual all-around final, but due to the injury was unable to compete. is a Japanese gymnast. He has won two Olympic medals in the men's artistic team all-around – silver in 2012 (London) and gold in 2016 (Rio de Janeiro). Kenzō Shirai
is a Japanese men's former athlete of artistic gymnastics ( AG). Born in Yokohama, Kanagawa, he, a graduate of Kishine High School, joined the Nippon Sport Science University ( Nittaidai). Shirai took the team gold, and a bronze on individual vault with the Japanese men's AG (MAG) national team at the 2016 Summer Olympics ( OG) in Rio de Janeiro while more major wins were from the World Championships ( WC). Judo at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro took place from 6 to 12 August at the Carioca Arena 2 inside the Barra Olympic Park in Barra da Tijuca. Around 386 judoka competed in 14 events (seven each for both men and women). Qualification Similar to 2012 format, qualification was based on the world ranking list prepared by International Judo Federation as of May 30, 2016. A total of 252 athletes directly qualified through the ranking with only the top 22 men or top 14 women in each division, ensuring that each NOC was subjected to a limit of one judoka per division. The women's open-water marathon was held on August 15, and the men's open water race on August 16 in Fort Copacabana. Open water quality The location for open-water events was a source of concern for athletes since scientists have found microbes in the waters off of Fort Copacabana and drug-resistant super bacteria off the beaches of Rio de Janeiro in 2014 and 2016 studies due to the daily dumping of hospital waste and household raw sewage into the rivers and ocean.
