Japan Professional Sports Grand Prize
is given to one sportsperson or sports team every year since 1968 by the Japan Professional Sports Association. The award is one of the most prestigious all-sport awards in Japanese sport. The recordholders are the baseball players Ichiro Suzuki and Sadaharu Oh (three awards). A committee of representatives from Tokyo newspapers, wire services, television and radio for sports media are responsible for making the selections. The winner is given the Prime Minister Trophy. Katsuaki Matsumoto
was a Japanese professional track racing cyclist. Matsumoto is the leading all-time winner amongst professional Keirin track racers with a career total of 1341 wins. Matsumoto started as a cyclist in 1949, and won the national keirin championships in 1954 and 1955. He retired from racing on 1 October 1981. After retirement he trained young cyclists. Ayako Okamoto
is a Japanese professional golfer. She won 62 tournaments internationally, including 17 on the U.S.-based LPGA Tour. She is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Early career Okamoto was born in Akitsu, Hiroshima, now part of Higashihiroshima, Hiroshima, Japan. In her youth and early 20s she was a softball player. She was the star pitcher on the Japanese national champion in 1971. Her club team was owned by the textile company Daiwabo, where Okamoto worked. Randy Bass
Randy William Bass (born March 13, 1954) is an American politician and former baseball player. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) and Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), and served in the Oklahoma Senate. Bass made his MLB debut in 1977, and moved to NPB in 1983. He twice won the batting Triple Crown in NPB and still holds the highest single-season batting average; he is considered one of the greatest American players in Japanese baseball history. Sachio Kinugasa (:ja:衣笠祥雄, 衣笠 祥雄; January 18, 1947 – April 23, 2018) was a Japanese people, Japanese professional baseball third baseman for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp of the Nippon Professional Baseball league from 1965 to 1987. He was nicknamed ja, Tetsujin, italic=yes, label=none, meaning "Iron Man". He played in a record-breaking 2,215 consecutive games, having surpassed Lou Gehrig's record by 1987.
