National Highways Of Japan
Japan has a nationwide system of distinct from the expressways. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and other government agencies administer the national highways. Beginning in 1952, Japan classified these as Class 1 or Class 2. Class 1 highways had one- or two-digit numbers, while Class 2 highways had three-digit numbers. For example, routes 1 and 57 were Class 1 highways while 507 (the one with the highest number) was a Class 2 highway. A 1964 amendment to the governing law resulted in a unification of the classes, which took effect in April of the following year. Highways numbered since that time have had three-digit numbers, so the numbers 58–100, which had so far been unused, remained unused. However, when Okinawa Prefecture reverted to Japanese control in 1972, Route 58, with its southern endpoint in Okinawa's capital city of Naha, was established. Esashi, Hokkaido (Hiyama)
is a town in Hiyama Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. It is the capital of Hiyama Subprefecture. One of the oldest towns in Hokkaido, the name Esashi comes from the Ainu word for kombu, a type of edible kelp well known in Japan. It is the birthplace of a folk music tradition called Esashi oiwake. Geography Esashi is a district and port town located on the western seaboard of Hokkaido on the Assabugawa river, facing the Sea of Japan. Its eastern part is mountainous. The town is bordered by the municipalities of Kaminokuni, Assabu and Otobe. It has a ferry connection to Okushiri island. The rail link was discontinued in 2014; Esashi Station was the terminus of the Esashi Line. Kamome Island in the town is part of Hiyama Prefectural Natural Park. Yakumo, Hokkaidō
is a List of towns in Japan, town in Oshima Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. As of September 2016, the town's population was estimated as 17,299, with a population density, density of 18 persons per km2. The total area is 955.98 km2. On October 1, 2005, the town of Kumaishi, Hokkaido, Kumaishi was merged into Yakumo; now in the newly created Futami District, Hokkaido, Futami District. The former town of Kumaishi joined Oshima Subprefecture at the same time. Geography Yakumo is the only municipality which faces both the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean. The Yakumo area and the Kumaishi area are separated by mountains. The name comes from the word "Yakumo" in the Waka (poetry), Waka composed by Susanoo-no-Mikoto.
