The first of two 1896 municipal elections was held January 13, 1896 to elect the town council (consisting of a mayor and six aldermen, each elected for a one-year term), five trustees for the public school division and four trustees for the separate school division. Edmonton Town Council
The Edmonton City Council is the governing body of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edmonton currently has one mayor and twelve city councillors. Elections are held every four years. The most recent was held in 2021, and the next is in 2025. The mayor is elected across the whole city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. Councillors are elected one per ward, a division of the city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. On July 22, 2009, City Council voted to change the electoral system of six wards to a system of 12 wards; each represented by a single councillor. The changes took effect in the 2010 election. In the 2010 election, Edmonton was divided into 12 wards each electing one councillor. Herbert Charles Wilson
Herbert Charles Wilson (December 7, 1859 – December 17, 1909) was a Canadian politician and physician. He served as mayor of the Town of Edmonton and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the North-West Territories. Wilson was born in 1859 in what would become the province of Ontario. The son of a manufacturer, Wilson's family had extensive business interests in the area of Picton, Ontario. Wilson studied medicine and moved to Edmonton in 1882, one of the first physicians to settle there. He was appointed to official medical positions and, for several years, owned a drugstore in town. He served as a consultant to First Nations reserves near Edmonton and also became a director of many local corporations. He was elected to the Territorial council in 1885, and soon became its speaker. During his speakership, he helped to change the council's rules and procedures. Matthew McCauley (politician)
Matthew McCauley (July 11, 1850 – October 25, 1930) was the first mayor of the city of Edmonton, and a member of the legislative assemblies of both the Northwest Territories and Alberta. McCauley was born into a farming family in Sydenham, Canada West (what would become the province of Ontario) to an Irish father and Canadian mother. His restless nature and desire for adventure led him to travel west to Manitoba. In Manitoba, he established a livery business, which he ran until he set off for Edmonton in 1879. He farmed for two years in Fort Saskatchewan before finally moving to Edmonton, where he established the settlement's first livery and cartage business. Along with a couple prominent Edmonton citizens, he formed an association aimed to restore order in the area, settling many disputes, including during the 1885 Riel Rebellion as its captain. Thomas Bellamy (politician)
Thomas Bellamy (June 6, 1853 – October 11, 1926) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Bellamy was born at Canada West, which would later be the province of Ontario. The son of an English immigrant, he entered the woodworking industry after finishing school. After returning to farming briefly, he moved to Manitoba where established an agricultural product dealing business and later worked for the Massey Harris agricultural supply company. His employment with that company would bring him to Edmonton where he continued to work for them until he left to start his own business, the Bellamy Company, which manufactured agricultural products, establishing himself as a prominent Edmonton businessperson. Involved with civic affairs upon his arrival in Edmonton, Bellamy would serve terms on the school board, and eventually city council, being first elected in 1895. Isaac Cowie
Isaac Cowie (November 18, 1848 – May 18, 1917) was a Scottish-born Canadian pioneer, fur trader, and politician. He served on the town council of Edmonton. Biography Cowie was born in Lerwick, Shetland on November 18, 1848. He spent two years volunteering with the 1st Edinburgh and Shetland Rifles. He attended the University of Edinburgh for one session, studying medicine, but did not complete his education before taking a position with the Hudson's Bay Company and moving to Rupert's Land in Canada. His first posting was in Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan, where he stayed until 1874, acting as manager of the post from 1872. In 1873, he dissuaded disgruntled First Nations from raiding the fort by meeting an armed band of them at the fort with two other men, revolvers in hand. For this he was made a justice of the peace. Charles Sutter
Charles William Sutter (November 19, 1856 – August 23, 1922) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Sutter was born in Toronto. As a child, his family moved to Perth County where his father died in 1867. Sutter worked on the family's farm for three years, and then was apprenticed as a tailor in Toronto for another four. In 1875, he moved to Winnipeg to work for the city's leading merchants, Higgins & Young. In 1879, Sutter set out by foot for Edmonton with James Ross, one horse, and a Red River ox cart, arriving 76 days later. He became a partner in John Sinclair & Co. in the dry goods and grocery business until it dissolved in 1885. John Kelly (Canadian Politician)
John Edmund Kelly (1852 – 1934) was a Canadian politician in Northwest Territories who served as a municipal councillor in Edmonton in the final decade before it became the capital of the newly created province of Alberta. Biography Kelly was born in Glengarry County, Canada West on July 2, 1852. He was trained as a marine and mechanical engineer. He settled in Fort Macleod, North-West Territories (NWT) in 1879, and subsequently built the first sawmill at Pincher Creek. Kelly came to Edmonton, NWT, in 1883. In 1892, he ran for election to Edmonton's first town council as an alderman. He was defeated, placing eleventh of fourteen candidates (the top six were elected). He was successful in his second attempt, in 1895, and was re-elected in 1896, placing sixth of eight candidates. He did not seek re-election in December 1896, and stayed out of politics thereafter. Joseph Henri Picard
Joseph Henri Picard (February 18, 1857 – May 23, 1934) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Picard was born in Saint-Jean-de-Matha, Quebec on February 18, 1857. He apprenticed as a carpenter before coming west in 1884 to Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan, Fort Qu'Appelle and then Regina, Saskatchewan, Regina. In Calgary, he met Father Albert Lacombe, who suggested to him that he move to Edmonton, which he did in 1887. Once in Edmonton, he opened a general store, Larue & Picard; it was sold in 1907 when both he and his partner retired. In 1903, he married Martine Voyer. The couple had two sons. Colin Strang (politician)
Colin Ferrie Strang (June 25, 1850 – December 10, 1900) was a politician in Alberta, Canada, and an alderman on Edmonton Town Council. Biography Strang was born in 1850 in Toronto to Struthers Strang, originally from Scotland and Janet Ferrie. He was educated in Hamilton. After a period working for hardware dealers W. McGivern & Co., in 1871 he moved to Winnipeg, where he worked as a bookkeeper (eventually as the head of his own accounting office) until moving to Edmonton in 1883. He became Edmonton's leading city accountant, and also worked as bank manager for Lafferty & Moore in 1890 and as business manager for the Moore and MacDowell sawmill in 1893. He was part owner of Ross Bros., a hardware firm. In 1892 he ran for alderman on Edmonton's first town council. He finished first of fourteen candidates (the top six were elected). John Cameron (Alberta Politician)
John Cameron (May 28, 1846 – October 6, 1919) was a merchant and politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. He is regarded as one of the city's pioneer citizens. Born in Canada West (later Ontario), Cameron worked as a merchant in his birth province and Manitoba before coming to Edmonton in 1881. In Edmonton he continued as a merchant, owning and operating a store for 15 years. In Edmonton he quickly established himself as a prominent citizen, serving on the inaugural Edmonton Board of Trade as president, which he would remain for five years. Cameron also was involved in the development of the Edmonton Public School Board, serving on the board in the 1890s. He was also involved in the town's politics, winning election to Edmonton's first town council in 1892 and serving an additional term when elected in 1895.
