Janet Ritterman
Dame Janet Elizabeth Ritterman (born 1 December 1941) is the Australian-educated former Director of the Royal College of Music in London, from 1993 to 2005. Ritterman was educated at North Sydney Girls High School, the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music (now Sydney Conservatorium of Music, part of the University of Sydney), the University of Durham, and King's College, London. She held academic positions in England from 1975 when she was Senior Lecturer in Music at the Middlesex Polytechnic (to 1979). Ritterman became the third Chancellor of Middlesex University on 3 July 2013. Royal College Of Music
The Royal College of Music is a music school, conservatoire established by royal charter in 1882, located in South Kensington, London, UK. It offers training from the Undergraduate education, undergraduate to the Doctorate, doctoral level in all aspects of Western Music including performance, composition, conducting, music theory and history. The RCM also undertakes research, with particular strengths in performance practice and performance science. An academy (Attic Greek: Ἀκαδήμεια; Koine Greek Ἀκαδημία) is an institution of secondary or tertiary higher learning (and generally also research or honorary membership). The name traces back to Plato's school of philosophy, founded approximately 385 BC at Akademia, a sanctuary of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and skill, north of Athens, Greece. Etymology The word comes from the ''Academy'' in ancient Greece, which derives from the Athenian hero, ''Akademos''. Outside the city walls of Athens, the gymnasium was made famous by Plato as a center of learning. The sacred space, dedicated to the goddess of wisdom, Athena, had formerly been an olive grove, hence the expression "the groves of Academe". Colin Lawson
Colin James Lawson (born 24 July 1949) is a British clarinettist, scholar, and Television presenter, broadcaster. He was born in Saltburn-by-the-Sea and educated at Bradford Grammar School. A pupil of Thea King, Lawson was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain during his teenage years. He subsequently read music at Keble College, Oxford. Postgraduate studies in music at the University of Birmingham saw Lawson awarded an MA in 1972 for his study of the clarinet in eighteenth-century repertoire. His pioneering doctoral research into the chalumeau was completed at the University of Aberdeen in 1976. In 2000, in recognition of his work across theory and practice, Lawson received a DMus from the University of London. In 2015, celebrating Lawson's pre-eminence in performance studies, the University of Sheffield awarded him an HonDMus. Michael Gough Matthews
Michael Gough Matthews (12 July 1931 – 11 April 2013) was a British pianist, teacher and musical administrator. After starting as a concert pianist he turned to teaching, spending much of his career at the Royal College of Music in London, from 1972 to 1993, the last eight years as director of the college. His time in office was marked by a successful resistance to government plans to merge the college with the Royal Academy of Music, and by the building of a new theatre for student performances. Life and career Early years Matthews was born in Essex, the son of Cecil Gough Matthews, a lawyer, and his wife Amelia Eleanor Mary Matthews. He showed an early talent for music and his parents encouraged his aptitude for the piano.
