Janela (Portuguese for "window") is a settlement in the eastern part of the island of Santo Antão, Cape Verde. It is situated on the Atlantic coast, 4 km southeast of Pombas and 14 km northeast of the island capital Porto Novo The central village, Pontinha, lies on a rocky peninsula. More villages are situated in the valley of the river Ribeira da Janela. The national road from Porto Novo to Pombas (EN1-SA03) passes through Janela. The Instituto Nacional de Estatística (Portuguese for the ''National Statistics Institute'', abbreviated as INE) is the public statistics institute of Cape Verde. Its current president is Osvaldo Rui Monteiro dos Reis Borges. The population censuses are held every first year of a decade; the most recent was in 2010. Farol de Fontes Pereira de Melo (also: ''farol da ponta de Tumbo'') is a lighthouse at the northeastern point of the island of Santo Antão, Cape Verde, Santo Antão in northwestern Cape Verde. The lighthouse was named after Fontes Pereira de Melo, prime minister of Portugal for several times between 1871 and 1886. It is a white octagonal masonry tower, 16 meters high.
