Jan De Vries (soldier)
Jan de Vries, (24 January 1924 – 27 May 2012) was a Dutch-born Canadian World War II paratrooper and veteran's advocate. His work as a board member of the Juno Beach Centre contributed to its creation. Military service de Vries served with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, parachuting into Normandy on D-Day and later parachuting across the Rhine River into Germany on March 24, 1945. He was wounded in action by a German sniper in July 1944, however had returned to combat by September 1944. Philanthropy de Vries was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 40 years. He served as a President of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion Association for 12 years. Under his leadership, the Association installed memorial plaques in Europe to commemorate their fallen comrades. Leeuwarden (; fy, Ljouwert, longname=yes /; Town Frisian: ''Liwwadden''; Leeuwarder dialect: ''Leewarden'') is a city and municipality in Friesland, Netherlands, with a population of 123,107 (2019). Lakeridge Health Ajax and Pickering is a hospital in Ajax, Ontario, Canada that is operated by Lakeridge Health. The hospital opened in 1954 as the ''Ajax and Pickering General Hospital''. It was founded in 1954 as the Ajax and Pickering General Hospital with 38 patient beds. New four-storey wings were added in 1964 and 1994. A major $80 million redevelopment project was completed in 2010. Almost 25 percent of the hospital was renovated. Management of the site was transferred from Rouge Valley Health System to Lakeridge Health effective December 1, 2016. Services The hospital has a capacity of 144 beds, and is raising $5 million to procure a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine to support the large population growth in the area. Victoria Cross
The Victoria Cross (VC) is the highest and most prestigious award of the British honours system. It is awarded for valour "in the presence of the enemy" to members of the British Armed Forces and may be awarded posthumously. It was previously awarded by countries of the Commonwealth of Nations, most of which have established their own honours systems and no longer recommend British honours. It may be awarded to a person of any military rank in any service and to civilians under military command. No civilian has received the award since 1879. Frederick George Topham
Frederick George Topham, VC (10 August 1917 – 31 May 1974) was a Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Early life and Second World War Born in York Township, Toronto, Canada, on August 10, 1917, Topham was educated here at King George Public School and Runnymede High School (now Runnymede Collegiate Institute) before working in the mines at Kirkland Lake. Topham enlisted in the Canadian Army during the Second World War on August 3, 1942, and served at home and abroad as a medical orderly, initially with the 48th Highlanders of Canada, before transferring to the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps (RCASC).
