Jamestown, Accra
Located directly east of the Korle Lagoon, Jamestown and Usshertown are the oldest districts of Accra, Ghana and emerged as communities around the 17th century British James Fort and Dutch Ussher Fort on the Gulf of Guinea coast. These districts were developed at the end of the 19th century, and following the rapid growth of the city during the 20th century, they became areas of a dense mixture of commercial and residential use. History Today, both Jamestown and Usshertown remain fishing communities inhabited primarily by the Ga. Although in a state of decay, the districts are significant in the history of Accra, which replaced Cape Coast as the capital of Gold Coast (British colony) in 1876. Korle Lagoon
The Korle Lagoon is a body of water in Accra, the capital of Ghana. Lying immediately to the west of the city centre, it has played an important role in the city's history. In the 1990s, it became known for its high levels of pollution. History Local tradition states that the first settlement in the area was established by the Onamorokor We hunters, on the east bank of the lagoon. The lagoon was believed to be inhabited by a spirit, who used its powers to enchant a woman named Dede, and used her to convince the group to settle in the location, in order to worship the spirit. The land became the property of the Korle We, and it was a matter of dispute whether this was the same group as the Onamorokor We. The settlement grew into Jamestown, now the western part of the city centre, and was an important source of fish until the 1950s. Gold Coast (British Colony)
The Gold Coast was a British Crown colony on the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa from 1821 until its independence in 1957 as Ghana. Oblempong Nii Kojo Ababio V (Ezekiel Quarmina Allotey Cofie; 12 June 1920 - 22 December 2017) was a Ghanaian dental surgeon pioneer who also served as the Jamestown Maŋtsɛ (Paramount Chief) and President of the Ngleshie Alata Traditional Council. He was popularly known as Dentist Cofie. The Chale Wote Street Art Festival also known as Chale Wote is an alternative platform that brings art, music, dance and performance out into the streets. The festival targets exchanges between scores of local and international artists and patrons by creating and appreciating art together. Since 2011, CHALE WOTE has included street painting, graffiti murals, photography, theater, spoken word, interactive art installations, live street performances, extreme sports, film shows, a fashion parade, a music block party, recyclable design workshops and much more. Bukom
Bukom Square is a place, associated with the "Ga" people, located in Ghana, in the heart of Accra, the capital. Bukom is known for its output of successful boxers to America. A large proportion of these boxers settle in the Bronx, New York City, primarily because of its high Ghanaian population. Some notable boxers to come out of Bukom include Azumah Nelson, Bukom Banku, Ike Quartey and Kwame Asante, as well as welterweight Joshua Clottey, who won the IBF title by defeating Zab Judah in August 2008. Cape Coast is a city, fishing port, and the capital of Cape Coast Metropolitan District and Central Region of Ghana.
