James William Cannon (born Mecklenburg County, North Carolina April 25, 1852 – December 21, 1921) was an American industrialist, and founder of the Cannon Mills Corporation and the City of Kannapolis, North Carolina. Cannon Mills Corporation
The Cannon Mills Company was an American textile manufacturing company based in Kannapolis, North Carolina, that mainly produced towels and bed sheets. Founded in 1887 by James William Cannon, by 1914 the company was the largest towel and sheets manufacturer in the world. Cannon remained family-owned until 1982 when it was sold to David H. Murdock. Murdock sold the company to Fieldcrest in 1985, becoming Fieldcrest-Cannon. The company was subsequently sold to Pillowtex Corporation in 1997, which entered bankruptcy in July 2003. The remaining Cannon brands were purchased by the Iconix Brand Group. Charles Albert Cannon (November 29, 1892 – April 2, 1971) was the son of Cannon Mills Company founder James William Cannon and president of the firm from the 1920s to the 1960s. He was born, lived and died in Concord, North Carolina. With Cannon Mills Cannon Mills manufacturing plants were located mainly in and around Concord, North Carolina and particularly in nearby Kannapolis, North Carolina, a company-owned town created and named after the Cannon family. Kannapolis was the largest unincorporated town in the nation for many years. Due to the support of the Cannon family the YMCA in Kannapolis enjoyed one of the highest memberships in the nation and had excellent facilities.
