James Wharton, Baron Wharton Of Yarm
James Stephen Wharton, Baron Wharton of Yarm (born 16 February 1984) is a British Conservative Party politician. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for his home constituency of Stockton South from the 2010 general election, until losing his seat in the 2017 general election. Wharton was appointed Minister for the Northern Powerhouse after his re-election in 2015 and moved to a ministerial position in the Department for International Development by Theresa May in 2016. In September 2020, he took his seat as a member of the House of Lords, taking the title Baron Wharton of Yarm. Early life James Wharton grew up in Wolviston, County Durham. He was educated at two independent schools: Yarm School and St Peter's School, York. James Wharton is the author of ''Out in the Army: My life as a gay soldier'' and ''Something for the Weekend': Life in the chemsex underworld'' and an LGBT activist. Wharton was born in Wrexham on the first of January 1987, and grew up in the nearby village of Gwersyllt. In 2009, he garnered attention by featuring on the cover of Soldier Magazine – the official monthly publication of the British Army – as an openly gay trooper in the Blues and Royals. Wharton came out as gay to his regiment in 2005, aged 18 and just six years after the army's discrimination against gay people was declared a breach of human rights by the European Court of Human Rights. Before 2000, Wharton could have been court-martialled. James "Jem" Wharton (3 March 1813 — 25 April 1856) was an English boxer. Wharton boxed from 1833 to 1840 and had a career record of eight wins and one draw. He was posthumously inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2012. Early life Wharton's early life is unclear, during his boxing career he described himself as being born in Tangier, Morocco on 3 March 1813 and that his mother was a peasant, while his father was a sailor. However, in the 1851 census Wharton gave London as his place of birth. Wharton said he started working as a cabin boy on the a ship called ''Hopewell'' at the age of twelve. It was on the ''Hopewell'' that he began boxing''.'' Career Wharton fought multiple challengers in the early 1830s while working on the ''Hopewell''. James Anthony Wharton (born 8 July 2006) is an Australian racing driver who currently competes in the 2024 Formula Regional European Championship for Prema Racing. He was a race winner in Italian F4, finishing fourth in 2023. He was a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy between 2021 and 2023. Career Karting Born in Bundoora in 2006, Wharton began karting at the age of eight in his homeland of Australia. Following two years in Mini and Cadet karting he won eight out of ten races in his 2017 season, winning the Australian Championship in the process. Brigadier General James Edward Wharton (December 2, 1894 – August 12, 1944) was a career United States Army officer who briefly commanded the 28th Infantry Division in the Battle of Normandy before being killed in action during World War II. Early life and military career Wharton was born in Elk, Chaves County, New Mexico on December 2, 1894. He grew up in New Mexico and Arizona, and graduated from the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts at New Mexico State University in 1917. He received his commission as a second lieutenant through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC). Wharton was commissioned in the Infantry Branch. His World War I and subsequent assignments included the 62nd and 57th Infantry Regiments in the Philippines, and he later served at Camp Fremont, Fort Benning, Fort Lee, and with the 3rd U.S. Infantry at Fort Snelling.
