James W. Douglas
James William Douglas (June 1, 1851 – November 7, 1883) was a Canadian who represented Victoria City (provincial electoral district), Victoria City in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1875 to 1878. He was born in Victoria, British Columbia, Victoria, Colony of Vancouver Island, the son of Sir James Douglas (governor), James Douglas, the first governor of Vancouver Island, and Amelia Connolly. James had been born in British Guiyana to a Scottish planter father and a free person of color, free woman of colour. Amelia was the Anglo-Métis daughter of William Connolly (fur trader), William Connolly, fur trader, and his Cree wife; she grew up at the Hudson's Bay Company forts managed by her father. Douglas was educated in Victoria. He served in the local militia. For a time, he studied law with John Foster McCreight. In 1877, Douglas married Mary, the daughter of Andrew Charles Elliott. Andrew Charles Elliott
Andrew Charles Elliott (June 22, 1829 – April 9, 1889) was a British Columbian politician and jurist. Career Elliott's varied career in British Columbia included gold commissioner, stipendiary magistrate, and, following the union of the Island and Mainland Colonies in 1866, high sheriff of the province. He resigned his magistracy to take the post as High Sheriff. He was a member of the colony's appointed Colonial Assembly from 1865 to 1866. After the colony became a province of Canada, he was elected, in 1875, to the Victoria City seat in the provincial legislature and became leader of the opposition. Before his election to the House, he was a provincial magistrate in Lillooet. John Foster McCreight
John Foster McCreight, (1827 – November 18, 1913) was a jurist and the first premier of British Columbia. Early life McCreight was born in Caledon, County Tyrone, Ireland, to a well-established and well-connected family. After completing law studies at Trinity College Dublin, he was called to the bar in 1852. Shortly thereafter, McCreight left Ireland to establish a practice in Melbourne, Australia. McCreight left Australia in 1859 and sailed first to San Francisco and then to Victoria, British Columbia. Life and career in British Columbia At the time of McCreight's arrival in Victoria in 1860, it was the capital of the Colony of Vancouver Island, which at the time was governed by the powerful and autocratic Chief Factor of the Hudson's Bay Company, Sir James Douglas.
