James Tunney (Irish Politician)
James Tunney (1892 – 11 May 1964) was an Irish Labour Party politician who served for seven terms in Seanad Éireann and for one term in Dáil Éireann. He was elected to the 2nd Seanad by the Labour Panel in 1938, he was re-elected that year to the 3rd Seanad. At the 1943 general election, he was elected as a Labour Party Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin County constituency, but lost his seat at the 1944 general election. In the same year, Tunney was returned to the 5th Seanad by the Labour Panel. In 1948 he was elected to the 6th Seanad by the Agricultural Panel, which also elected him to the 7th Seanad in 1951. In 1954, he was nominated by the Taoiseach, John A. Costello to the 8th Seanad. In 1957, following the defeat of the Second Inter-Party Government, he was elected to the Seanad for a seventh and final time, again by the Agricultural Panel. James C. Tunney (25 December 1923 – 16 January 2002) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. Tunney was born in Dublin in 1923, and was educated at St. Vincent's C.B.S. in Glasnevin. He was first elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin North-West constituency at the 1969 general election. He served continuously in the Dáil until losing his seat at the 1992 general election, having been a TD for Dublin Finglas from 1977 to 1981 when Dublin constituencies were reconfigured as 3-seaters, before being returned for Dublin North-West in 1981. During that period he served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education (after 1978, Minister of State at the Department of Education) in three governments. Born in Grafton, Ontario, Tunney was a fourth generation farmer from Northumberland County, Ontario. He was a director of the Dairy Farmers of Canada for 18 years, a director of the Dairy Bureau of Canada for 8 years, and a director of the Ontario Milk Marketing Board for 12 years. Jim Tunney (born March 3, 1929) is a former American football official in the National Football League (NFL) from 1960 to 1990. In his 31 years as an NFL official, Tunney received a record 29 post-season assignments, including ten Championship games and Super Bowls VI, XI, and XII and named as an alternate in Super Bowl XVIII. He is still the only referee who has worked consecutive Super Bowls, and likely will be the only one to do so. Following Ben Dreith's death in April 2021, Tunney is the only referee from the first 16 Super Bowls who is still alive.
